Overall Value: Average Oversized Equipped: Average Oversized Sensitive: Average
Multi Security: Excellent Privacy: Good Pain Medication: Excellent
Quiet: Good Visiting: Excellent Staff Responsive: Good
Parking: Very Poor
How Selected: I work there, so is was very cost effective for me to have the surgery there.
Competitors: The nursing staff is not nearly as overworked as in other hospitals in the area. UMC is not for profit, so they can get away with giving better patient loads, where as other, for profit, hospitals try to load their nurses up to be as cost effective as possible. I know this only from my and my co-workers experience.
Comments: Although my stay was mostly psositve. I did have some complaints. The radiology department was not very receptive to my needs after surgery during the swallow evaluation. My discharging nurse should have been more receptive to my needs as a bariatric patient (I needed a large wheelchair). I was also disappointed with the nursing staff's assistant with my ADLs ( I was never offered any help to bathe).

How Selected: I had to go in to the ER for left side chest pain following my release.
Competitors: UMC is the Trauma Center for the county I live in - and I know they have the most comprehensive equipment and training in Clark County.
Comments: I was in the ER for left side chest pain. I was taken by ambulance from the Urgent Care. AMR Ambulance now has 1 Oversized gurney/Ambulance especially for large patients - which uses a wench system to raise and lower you to their truck - which is great. The ER had fair size gurneys, however, no BIG gowns. I had to use two gowns to cover my body. I had to explain my problem at least four times, but the nurses in the ER were great - Kate and Amber. They were very attentive to most of my needs. I could have really used some pain meds though! They took a CAT scan of my abdomen and chest to make sure I had no blood clots or leaks/hernias of my new pouch. Those came back negative. (And the CAT Scan people were not very helpful in helping me get on and off my gurney and onto the scanning table).

How Selected: UMC is the hospital where my surgeon Dr Barry Fisher operates and teaches. He trusts the staff and that's good enough for me. I trust him.
Competitors: This is the first time I've ever been in this hospital. I found the staff friendly and knowledgeable not to mention helpful when I had to walk for the first few times.
Comments: All in all I found that I was well tended to while in the hospital. I only had one instance that bothered me and it was the fact that after my first 24 hours drymouth I had to beg for a cup of ice. Seems someone forgot to take the NPO sign down.

Comments: Dr Fisher has trained the staff on his floor to deal with this WLS patients. They are very willing to help and are very cooperative.
