How Selected: from it's reputation and i have friends that had their surgeries in this hospital.
Competitors: about the same ratings.
Comments: everything went well. i had three concerns: 1- the nurses did not identify the medications prior to giving them to me. they did not use any type of check system to be sure it was the right medicine given to the right patient. 2- the assistants/intern doctors working with my surgeon were very flighty. they seemed very unorganized and unsure of important facts. 3- the morning after my surgery when i went down for my swallow screen the girl taking the xray was horrible. she treated me like a child and was very rude. i notified the pt relations dept when they sent me my post hospitalization survey and they were quick to handle the situation and kept me informed on what was being done. all the nurses and aides at the hospital were very nice and did a great job of taking care of my needs.

Comments: Overall service was good, but ist shift didn't tell 2nd shift that family was waiting and had waited since 7:30 that morning. Was permitted to see me at 9:30pm. Patients family should ask questions before too much time has passed.

Comments: On over all I was pleased Its a huge hospital so its gonna have its disadvantages, parking is troublesome at times, need valet parking for all intesd of the handicap. Dr Schirmer and his staff and the Bariatric floor are well trained and very experienced in my book.

How Selected: Previous surgeries. I wasn't disappointed with the service they provided when I had the lapband there.
Competitors: I wouldn't even compare it to the local butcher shops.
Comments: Every appoinment I have ever had at UVA has been wonderful. All doctors there are so caring and dedicated. There are a lot of residents around, but they mostly observe. Some people may have issues with that, but it doesn't bother me. One day, those people may be in a position to save my life. I like knowing they are getting a great education.

How Selected: It was the only facility in the area that performed the procedure. My surgeon also worked there.
Competitors: There is one other facility in my city. I think both are very good. It depends on your situation and condition. UVA is among the "100 Top Hospitals in the Country" list. I also am a volunteer there. During my training I was reminded of what a caring and professional facility it is. I feel blessed to have two good medical facilities in my city.
Comments: A good place to be if you are sick; especially if you need the most advanced medical knowledge there is.

How Selected: It is the hospital where my surgeon does his surgery.
Competitors: My favorite hospital and staff is Martha Jefferson Hospital, but they do not have any doctors who do bariatric surgery, so UVa was my second choice.
Comments: I was generally pleased with everything up until Sunday because the nurse on the morning shift that day acted like I was not even there and more over I felt that she didn't want to have to deal with me. I told her I would like to take a shower when she was not busy and she completely ignored me and didn't even check to see if I was okay, if I had fallen or anything. I didn't bring shampoo or soap with me (big mistake) and I had to get the secretary to get me some so I could take a shower because as usual my nurse was ignoring me. Other than that one nurse and the complication - I was very happy and I am very happy that is over.

Competitors: It is a teaching hospital so there is always someone coming in. It really wasn't that bad just confusing after awhile as to who you were talking too.
Comments: I was very happy with everything until the last night and next day. The night nurse really didn't care much about anything she was just cold. The lady next to me was in a lot of pain and did not get the care she really needed. The next morning the new nurse was very scatterbrained and often lost in her own world. She lost a sample needed to get me discharged. She was never available and when she was she was blaming everyones problems on depression and discussing her personal medications. Anna came up and talked to me and was very nice. Of course the nurse had told her I was depressed which I was not. I was just frustrated. Anna, the first set of nurses and the nurses aides were great. The last two nurses might want to check out other professions.

Comments: Everything is great, location, ease of finding your way around. THey were very slow on getting me a fan after surgery as too many were in use. Being in semiprivate room could not change heat.

How Selected: I grew up in C'ville and I know UVA to be excellent. I know too, that no matter how wonderful a surgeon is, and Schirmer has an excelelnt reputation and excellent bedside manner, I know I can count on a number of interns and residents to find ANY error and give any help.
