About this Hospital
| |
UC Irvine Healthcare's bariatric surgery program offers individuals in Orange County and Greater Los Angeles the latest options for weight loss surgery. Our team specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches to bariatric surgery, including the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and the LAP-BAND® techniques.
World-Class Multidisciplinary Team
Led by board-certified gastrointestinal surgeons, Drs. Ninh T. Nguyen and Kevin Reavis, UC Irvine Healthcare's bariatric surgery program offers individuals in Orange County and Greater Los Angeles the most advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. The multidisciplinary team of experts includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, psychologists, dietitians, nurses and patient coordinators.
LAPAROSCOPIC BARIATRIC SURGERIES PERFORMED
LAP-BAND®...Simple and Reversible
In this procedure, a small silicone band is placed around the upper section of the stomach to restrict the stomach's size, limiting the amount of food you can eat. The band has an inflatable balloon that can be adjusted, allowing you and your doctor to fine-tune the device to your individual medical and personal needs. You'll feel comfortably full with a small amount of food and will continue to feel full for several hours. This procedure has few risks and shorter recovery times, with slower, more gradual weight loss than a gastric bypass.
GASTRIC BYPASS (Roux-en-Y)...Works Two Ways
The Roux-en-Y procedure, also known as gastric bypass, permanently seals off most of the stomach to decrease the amount of food you can eat and restructures the small intestine to reduce the number of calories you can absorb. Though the procedure includes more risks, gastric bypass produces a more rapid weight loss than Lap-Band.
SUPPORT GROUP & ORIENTATION GROUP
UC Irvine Healthcare's bariatric surgery monthly meetings provide a supportive environment where pre-and post-surgery patients gather to discuss topics that can help contribute to their success. This unique setting allows patients to network with others who may share similar experiences. A guest speaker is often invited to discuss a topic in post-operative care. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.

• Preparing for surgery
• Getting through the first days of surgery

I was relased to soon form my surgery. I was in alot of pain and was unable to care for myself. If not for a good friend and his wife I think I would be in a bit of trouble. I was at UCi for three days and had to say with my friend for another three days before I was able to go home.
But I'm ok and now on the raod of better health. |

| Was sent there for my lap band surgery in 2005. My Dr. was Ninh Nygwen. Good Dr. but don't use UCI medical Center. I had an arguement with one of Dr. Ninh Nywens office. Dr.s boss (lady)moved in front of me in exam room and did not premit me to leave. My husband heard management(lady) and I arguing and went into the back to get me. This happened after my surgery. While in the Hospital nurses left me alone for hours with no help. My urine catheder got bent this was not alowing my bladder to empty. I called for nurse many times no one came. It took an elderly man to walk by my room and here me yelling for help. He went and told the nurse I needed help. well help did not come for another hour. It only came when the same elderly man stopped by to see if I was ok. When I told him that the nurse did not come yet I could here him yelling at the nurses until they came in. He made sure the the nurses came in my room. If it wern't for that man I think I would have died form my bladder bursting.

This is far the worse. I have had to go there many times and every time I was treated horribly. I felt as if I was going to die many times. I would never suggest anyone go here or to a DR Naim. |
| Comments: |
The nurses were horrible and uncaring. The surgeon I had was awful and If another surgeon and the team of Drs wouldnt have stepped in to help me I truly feel i would have died. Its finally 8 1/2 months later and its been a horrible 8 months. There was a particular nurse i had on 2 separate floors named Guadalupe, she was horrible and mean and treated me horribly. Most of the nurses cannot draw blood or put in an IV so I had to get poked numerous times to then just have someone from the lab come and do it. Any other hopsital or lab they draw it with no problem for I have good veins. The way I was treated there was awful and that alone would make me never have the surgery . Please noone go there or to DR.NIAM who is now in Long beach, california. If you do please be careful and always have a friend or loved one with you for support. |

| updating from last year I can tell you that it was night and day. I had surgery last year, and had to have an ERCP, and was on 3North. It was the only bed available, and had really bad nursing care. This year I had to have the surgery again, and instead of going in through the ER, I went in through normally scheduled surgery, and was given a private room, and was in the tower section. This experience was very positive, and was like a night and day experience compared to last year. I had a pain pump the entire time I was in hospital this year, and last year I did not, however, I found out after the fact, that last year I was on the ortho floor, and had to share a room with 2 other patients whose family was ill, and which I became ill, and took home the flu. This year, the staff was very positive and caring, and really went all out to make sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. I had the 2 top surgeons in the world for this, Dr. Nguyen, and Dr. Lee. If you are planning to have gastric bypass at UCI, Dr Nguyen and his staff are tops. I would recommend them to anyone, and especially if you are on the GI or Surgical floors, it really was a positive experience as compared to last year. |
| Comments: |
UCI is a great hospital for the world renown doctors and the surgical floor I was on in 2007 was 100% better than the ortho floor I was on last year.
Hopefully everyone will get to be in the surgical floor section, because those nurses really do care about you, and were very kind and considerate....it was definitely a whole different experience than last year.

I think it was the best of all the local hospitals, specifically because there is so much knowledge floating around being a teaching hospital. There is care for any other issues that arise because it is not simply geared only toward WLS. |

The staff was great, accommodating, friendly, and understanding. I do think that dietary needs to change their broth. Nobody should have to look into a 30cc cup and see more semi-solid chicken fat than actual liquid. The beef broth was much better looking and tasting. |

| Comments: |
They are in great need of trainning on how to care for bypass patients. Radiologu had no idea about the fact bypass patients has only swallow one ounce. The dietitian had no idea what the required diet was for a bypass patient. In general this surrgery is new to to UCI medical and they need to train thier staff in how to care for the bypass patient. I will say the skill and care of the surgeon did however make it worth putting up with the inadequicy of the hospital. |
