How Selected: My surgeon's only practice at this hospital in mid-Missouri and I live in this town.
Competitors: I have been in this hospital before and had many complaints but I was extremely well taken care of during this stay except for the Dietary Department; I had the most trouble with them the last time as well because they appear to not understand the needs of a vegetarian. I have been in no other hospitals in Columbia but have friends who state that they would never be admitted to this hospital.
Comments: Overall, everyone was very caring and interested in how I was and what I needed (besides Dietary-they sent chicken broth the first time and when told to send veggie broth, they sent beef broth). I was in the step down unit immediately after surgery but they encouraged my visitors to stay until I kicked them out. They were thorough in their assessments and made sure, at each shift change that the RN and nursing Tech names were changed on the white boards in each of the rooms. They tried not to disturb me if they did not need to. The rooms were clean and when I used the call bell someone answered right away and got me what I needed. There is new construction going on but I did not hear much of it but friends said the parking was poor.

Competitors: although the university hospital is a teaching hospital on campus, and you see students while you are there, they have one floor just for bariatric patients
Comments: have no complaints other than some general areas of cleaning of the facilities could have been better

How Selected: My insurance made me use it to cover my surgery
Competitors: The hospital room I had was very small. No room for guest chairs. Were my room was it is very old and needs a remodel.
Comments: I didn't receive my pain pump while in recovery like I should have. Not tell 1 1/2 hours after I was back in my room. My family talked to the surgeon at 5:30pm and was told I would in recovery for 1 hour. They would get to see me in my room there after. It was 9pm before I was in my room. I spent 3 and a half hour in recovery!! With no pain pump. They were giving me straight shots of morphine into my IV but it was not cutting it. I was groaning in pain for 4 1/2 hours. The rooms were not accommodating. No room for guest. My dad sat out in the hallway, my mom in a chair that was sat in front of the sink blocking the way to the sink. She had no choice. And my husband had to sit or lay on my bed. My nursing aid through out most of my stay was very nice and I am glad she gave me great care! I did have a psycho roommate at first and after complaining she was moved out. She had been asking to move out of our small janitors closet though as well so I don't know if it was me or her but I was glad to see her go. Very rarely did I have nursing staff encourage me to drink or walk. The two things I needed to be doing. I had one great nurse who was the one who ended up finding me the pain pump. I work as a nurses aid. I would not want to work at this hospital.

How Selected: I work there. My insurance paid better there. Mainly because it is one of the best hospitals in the area.
Competitors: It is one of the best in the area.
Comments: The only problem I had was that the bathrooms are incredibly small. I started at 255 and if i have been 100lbs heavier it would have been difficult to get in and out of the door. I know the super morbidly obese go to a different floor and they might have bigger facilities.

How Selected: I am an employee of the University of Missouri and familiar with this hospital. The addition of Dr. Scott and Dr. de la Torre to their staff helped me to decide to have my surgery there.
Competitors: At least equal to - if not better than - other local hospitals. Although the Bariatric Clinic there is relative new, Dr. Scott and Dr. de la Torre have performed many more bariatric surgeries than the staff performing the same surgeries at other local hospitals.
Comments: I found all staff to be friendly, respectful and helpful. I felt that I received excellent care.

How Selected: This was the only hospital that my surgeon uses for my insurance
Competitors: I don't really know...this was my first hospital stay
Comments: It was a very nice hospital. The nurses were all great. It seemed a little hectic and crowded at times since they had so many students and residents. I was a little frustrated the day I was to be discharged though. They told me at 7am that I was going home and didn't let me go until almost 5pm. I didn't see my surgeon once while I was in the hospital...not even before my surgery started. That worried me a bit.

How Selected: This hospital is closest to me about 30min away rather than 2 hrs to DePaul. I feel so confident in my surgeon that I think he would not practice at a hospital that he did not think could or would not meet his patients as well as his own standards.
Competitors: I had a tonsilectomy over a year ago in this hospital and I really liked the care that they provide and how they handle all the insurance info and dont leave that all up to the patient - So I really cant compare what I dont know!
Comments: I would recommend it to anyone - I have had surgeries there before and will so again!

How Selected: The only hospital providing this surgery.
Competitors: Not as clean, quiet, or private as Boone
Comments: Housekeeping was poor. Repeated complaint about cold temperature (below zero outside) got no response until surgeon visited and he complained. Even then, repairman said he could not fix and nurses were extremely reluctant to change me to another room, although I was running a fever, sweating and freezing.
