| My medical plan selected it. They have a contract with the facility. I do however feel that their choice was excellent. it was not just about the money. The hospital is a centre of excellence and it shows. |

I travelled to this hospital, but locally I don't think our hospitals even come close to this one. I never felt like I ran a risk of getting a secondary infection. The facility was clean, it didn't smell and was very welcoming. |

I got great care. I do wish the staff had been more knowledgeable about my eating abilities and needs. I had read all the literature but in my morphine haze none of it was clear. I could have used a tutorial! The nut didn't arrive until day 2 and I was already coming out of the fog. On the other hand, staff were very caring and professional and I got first rate care. |

They were very generous in making sure I got a private room so my sister could stay with me. Negatives were that they didn't have large enough pressure stockings for my size (they only had up to XL and they said I needed 2XL) and the bathrooms in the rooms had handicap bars on both sides of the toilet that were so close together that it was impossible to sit fully on the toilet. I even asked my size 10 sister to try it out and see if it was just because of my size and she said it was very tight for her to sit on it. |

| Comments: |
The surgical dept and staff and surgeon and team were fantastic!!! It was all down hill after the surgery, however. I was in so much pain I couldn't quite crying and all they could say was that they had ordered the morphine pump and it hadn't come up to the floor yet. If it hadn't been for my best friend being there they would have left me to scream in pain. As it was it took her 20 minutes to explain to them that they needed to control my pain iv push until the iv pump showed up (which didn't happen for more than another hour. My pain tolerance is not good, as I have found out from other operations and I discussed this with my surgeon and asked to have it put in my records ahead of time. Some one goofed. I had a couple of other instances of uncontrolled pain too. Then they switched pain medication typed and overmedicated me. No one offered to help me clean up or shower until the day I was leaving (went home on day three). Nurses ignored call buttons on swing and graveyard. Nurses were very young and afraid to advocate for the patients. The hospital was dingy and the restroom out in the hall filthy. It was 87 degrees inside the hospital and I cooked the whole time I was there. It was actually cooler outside on the sidewalk. They wanted me to have a wheel chair to leave but that had been ordered for 35 minutes when I gave up and left. I will never use this hospital again. Too bad, because the surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Hunter is excellent. |

It's an old hospital and I had a private room which I didn't expect with insurance. They had windows that opened so I could get some fresh air. I'm having problems regulating my temperature and that was helpful. |

The staff was very young and caring just don't try to get anything at shift change because they are so busy. I felt that they didn't ignore me when I did ask for something. I did have a lot of nausea and they gave me medicine for that. |

The pre-op care was absolutely wonderful. I felt cared for and secure. It was the staff on the GI floor post operatively that sucked. They were absolutely horrible. My sister even witnessed them falifying my medical records. It took over 45 minutes for someone to respond to the nurse call button. There were people so fed up they were just yelling for nurses. I was glad to get out of there. I felt safer at home where I knew people would respond if I called and would tend to my needs. There was only one nurse (Asmaret) and one CNT (Britt) that I liked. Everyone else was a joke. Shame on VM for this kind of medical care and then charge $20k for it. |

While I feel I received wonderful care at St Francis Hospital in Federal Way on previous surgeries, it seemed that Virgina Mason Hospital was a cut above. |
| Comments: |
Virginia Mason Hospital is a great Hospital. My experiences have been, for the most part, very positive. My only negative comment, and it is a very major shortcoming, is that the nursing staff on the patient floors seemed very insufficient to support the patient load. My wife and I needed to get very insistant with the nursing leads about responding to the call buttons and my pain med needs more promptly. |

Though I am a nurse, I have never been a patient in a Seattle area hospital |
| Comments: |
Most staff were wonderfully kind and caring. Anesthesia was fantastic and so supportive of WLS, it was fantastic going into surgery in their hands. The pre-op nurses were fantastic, again kind and caring and eased my nervousness.
The floor nurses were again kind but didn't see much of them though they did come in at least one time per shift. The PCT's did most of the care and they were nice but many were inexperienced. I had a transporter ram the stretcher she was taking me to xray in, into the wall. This was the day after surgery and she never even said sorry. Disappointing as a human let alone a care giver.
Overall, the floor staff seemed pretty inexperienced with the requirements of post op WLS and I was glad I was really well informed or would have done some things that I shouldn't have! |

I had to rate the privacy of VMMC as excellent considering they never responsed to any calls and only entered my room to wake me up in the middle of the night by banging the blood pressure maching into my bed to wake me. The nurses were rude and nasty and after waiting 55 minutes for someone to respond to my call light I finally called the hospital operator and had her connect me with the nurses station and they still didnt come in!!! Not only was my IV empty and beeping, I couldnt sit up to get out of bed and get to the bathroom plus my mouth and throat were so dry I was choking and my glands were so swollen i couldnt swallow. I resorted to calling my husband who got up, showered and dressed and down to the hospital and they still hadnt come in to help me! He bitched them out but all that did was make them ignore me even more! I was born in this hospital and my Mom retired after 36 years of working there but I will NEVER go back there! |

| I had the surgery - and was very pleased with Virginia Mason. There were a few nurses that weren't so nice post-op but over all the experience was really fantastic. Parking totally stinks there and kept people from coming to visit. I was pleased that I was visited at least twice daily from the surgery team. They were the best. I was fortunate to go to a private room that was so comfortable. I was so hot in the hospital and they found a fan and allowed me to run it all day and night, which I love the white noise for sleep. A few of the nurses were not so kind, but mostly they were great. |
| Competitors: |
I like the care. I have been at Harborview Hospital for surgery and the nurses there were awful nor did the listen to me about pain - very insensitive to my needs and at one point a women fell out her bed and I had to page the nurses 4 times to get them to come and assist. It was a disgrace. |

I think if you are looking for the best in surgeons you would be best to go to Virginia Masons. Every surgeon I met there was on top of their game. Kind, considerate and the best support. It was great. |

The hospital and staff (all except one woman) were all wonderful and caring. I felt well taken care of. I had one nurse that I asked to go to the bathroom and she opened the bathroom door and left. I had the stockings that are hooked up to the monitor to squeeze your legs and I couldn't get out of bed. I had to get to the button to get someone else to come and help me. I asked to take a shower and again she opened the door. She is the only person I had problems with but the rest of the staff were beyond wonderful. |

For bariatric patients, they could be better equipped. The main issues I had were that they do not supply robes to fit large patients, they expect us to wear two gowns, front to back. The final transport I needed, when leaving, first brought me a regular-sized wheelchair, and I had to wait longer for him to go and return with a wheelchair that fit me.
Being that most of my stay post-surgery I was feeling good, up and around, etc., I was well-enough to notice that the housekeeping was incompetent. Example was that there was thick dust on the top of the baseboard tiles, and on top of the soap dispenser, as well as other places in the room. I left them a note about that. |

I did not always fell confident in the nursing staff. Sometimes they would ask me what the doctors orders were. That surprised me. I would say what I thought but was not always sure. I asked if it was written down. They would say yes, but they were hoping to just ask me and not have to look at the record. I was not impressed by this. |
| Comments: |
Most of the staff were very professional. Having this kind of surgery really made me want to feel all of the staff was on top of what was needed for me. I felt that there was a disconnect and not all of the nurses knew exactly what to do with this weight loss surgery. When I was able to drink, one of the nurses brought me a whole glass pf juice and said, "Enjoy!" I said, I think that the juice is supposed to be weakened with water and I need to measure how much I drank per 15 minutes. Her answer was, "Oh really. I wasn't sure." That bothered me. It was not the only time that I had to question what was going on and make sure that I was safe from these kind of bad decisions. |

Although my hospital experience started out a little bumpy (Read on, I'll elaborate). Overall I felt Virginia Mason provided excellent care. My check in (pre-op) was scheduled for 5:45 a.m. Surgery @7:30. However, when I arrived at 5:45 a.m. I was told that my appointment time was not until 9:15 a.m. Hmm... someone dropped the ball here. I would say it was Steve at Dr.Hunter's office because the night before he is suppose to call and tell you what your actual check-in time is. The 5:45 time he gave me was on Monday so obviously the times changed between Monday and Wednesday and it was his responsibility to inform me.
On to the actual hospital stay; |

The staff at Virginia Mason are very efficient and friendly. They treated my with respect and kindness.
There were a few "loud" patients on my floor so it wasn't as quiet as i would have liked it, but i was able to close my door. |

Compared to Providence and Harborview in the Seattle area, well below standards I've seen elsewhere. |

The Dr was awesome, the addt'l surgeon and the anastesiology team were great. However, the nursing staff left much to be desired. While they were all friendly, there was a lot of confusion. Examples: 45 minute response time at 2AM when I pressed the call button. A nurses aid spilled my ibuprofren and never notified anyone. Her comment to me was "I hope that wasn't important" One nurses aid said I could not have my pain meds when I asked for them 3 hrs into the next round. The next nurse who saw me in obvious pain said I was supposed to have been receiving them every two hours. On the evening shift no less than 30 min response to any call. There was a mess up with my pain medication and a full syringe was left sitting on my tray for 2 hrs. When I called again and asked about it there was a new nurse who didn't have a clue what it was or if I needed it. It then disapprered with that nurse and never came back so I have no clue what happened. Two times dietary served me liquid diet with SUGAR~! Regular jello and coffee w/sugar. We requested iced tea got coffee. No one ever asked if I'd like to wash up, shower etc. Only 1 nurse offered to help me out of bed and get me walking despite the fact that we know this is crucial. Only one time did a nurse have me use the spirometer for lung capacity. The day of discharge I was finally given a spreadsheet that told me what my intake should have been the prior 2 days. Day late, dollar short as they say. The transport staff literlly slammed my bed into every wall along the way when I had to get my G.I. test done the day after surgery. He pulled my IV line and I subsequently had an issue with the IV having to be relocated due to this. Had it not been for my family being there, I would have been in serious trouble~ I DO NOT recommend this hospital to anyone if you will be alone during this surgery. |
