some of the staff at the hospital were very rude. i will never go again. |
| Comments: |
my stay at the hospital was fair when i checked in thier were two nurses that were very rude and i had to report it to the head nurse and made a formal report. after the surgery when i was in my room it felt like an oven and the aides kept leaving the lights on at night it was a night mare. the day of departure thier was an ice storm and my ride couldn't pick me up they told me to wait in the lobby of the hospital until someone came.

| It was the only one on my HMO plan that my surgeon was affiliated with. His main hospital is Dobbs Ferry, but my insurance wouldnt cover that one. I had no choice where to go at the time. |
| Competitors: |
I think because it is such a large hospital, and a teaching hospital, there is too much going on in too big of a place and they lose that close one to one personal attention you get in a smaller hospital |
| Comments: |
I was NOT impressed considering this was the major hospital for the area, a hospital where trauma victims are flown to from miles around. However, my personal experience at the time was terrible....I was put on a floor that was not familiar with bariatric patients after my surgery (because the bariatric floor was full). The nurses had no clue what restrictions I was on with food, drink, ANYTHING! I sat in bed AFTER surgery for 3 full days without pressure cuffs on my legs to prevent bloos clots...and not one person ever attempted to help me up and walk around. I didnt know it at the time, but you are supposed to get up and walk around to prevent blood clots after surgery....no one ever got me out of bed. My mother in law at the time was a nurse and was visiting me on the 3rd day and was SHOCKED & APPAULED that they had not gotten me up out of bed. She immediately grabbed all of my equipment, hoses, IV lines and got me up and walking. I had no clue that I could have thrown a blood clot at any time because of laying still in the bed. The first time they fed me they did not give me sugar free products and I had my first dealings with DUMPING syndrome. I was sick as a dog, and couldn't understand why. I asked the nurse what they had gave me...and she said you are on FULL liquids...so juice, jello, soup..e.tc... but the JELLO and JUICE were REGULAR with FULL blown sugar! They had no clue that bariatric patients had to have sugar free!! Needless to say I could not wait to get home! I was in a room with an elderly lady that had some strange condition and all she did was moan in pain all day and night....it wasn't as if I was with another RNY patient that I could relate to and talk to. The floor I was placed on felt to me like I was just thrown wherever they had room...but no one bothered to even check into my restrictions and requirements. When the surgeon visited me the first time after surgery and I told him what was going on...he was MAD! So...hospital stay TERRIBLE....SURGEON...was WONDERFUL! |

The midinght staff was horrible. I think they all thought they had the night off. I thought I was at a bar with all the caring on they did. The floor outside my room was being cleaned with a machine at 1:00 am. The on the floor Doctor doing rounds gave me pain meds which was clearly marked all over that I was allergic to. Make sure you ask what every thing is before you take it.The morphine drip was always working. |

| Comments: |
I could not have asked for a better surgical experience at Westchester Medical Center. Doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practioners, medical students, and aides were all very, very nice. I never waited more than 2 minutes after pressing the nurse call button. I experienced almost no pain post-operatively thanks to the aggressive pain management philosphy of the staff. The food service brought exactly what I was prescribed to eat (i.e. jello, ice chips, broth) once I was cleared to eat. My room was clean and my visitors were courteously accomodated with extra chairs, etc. My only difficulty was when I reported the week before for pre-operative testing: I waited on numerous lines and had problems because of paperwork. In the end it took nearly six hours for a urine test, chest x-ray, blood collection, and an EKG, which is only about 15 minutes of actual testing. Aside from that, I highly reccomend Westchester Medical Center. |

Operating room, admissions and recovery was excellent. However when I was on the floor, the nursing staff was horrible. My doctors did come see me 2-3 times a day and they were great, however the nurses did not care and they were not overworked they were too busy BS'ing in the lounge. |

The first night I spent in the PACU and the care was excellent. Once moved to room, the care was good. My only bad experience was with the meals. I was served 2 meals while there and both times they were wrong and nothing that I could eat. I was thankful that I knew what I could have and what I couldnt. I wasnt able to eat until I got home. Spent 3 days in the hospital. |

| Once I selected my surgeon, Dr. Cerabona, I learned that the hospital would be Westchester Medical Center. |
| Competitors: |
Well, I would have preferred to have surgery at White Plains medical Center, because I have been there in the past and know that they have a high level of care for their patients. I think WMC does not have as high a level of care. |
| Comments: |
Immediately following the surgery I was in the Post Ansthesia Care Unit. The care I received in there was excellent. There was someone by my side at a moments notice, if I requested them to be. Once I was moved to a semi private room, the care slipped down to almost no care. My IV had backed up and the covering nurse did not want to put a new line in because she said I had bad veins. So she shut off my IV, which was connected not only to my fluids but also to my pain meds (the day after my surgery). I was in severe pain, running a high fever and when I would press the call button for the nurse, they would just shut off the light and not come to my room. I sat for 2 hours waiting for someone to come and help me. I finally had to call home and get my husband and my mother (out of fear and frustration) to come back and help me. |

I've only been hospitalized in one other hospital since living in NY..that was almost 2 years ago, it was in Sharon Hospital in Sharon, Ct. NO COMPARISON!!! Sharon Hospital is by far the BEST hospital experience I have EVER HAD in my ENTIRE LIFE!. Dr.'s should start doing these procedures there so patient care would be outstanding. |

Very huge, once you are out of recovery you are just a body, and you have to be your own advocate if you want anything |
| Comments: |
The surgical staff were great, the recovery room staff were at times great and at times very unprofessional. Once I got up to the "regular floor" my care went totally downhill, took hours to have needs met, from water, to help getting up, to the correct liquid to drink, to even getting my meds.... a nightmare. I was so thankful to be going home!! |

| Comments: |
I was put in ICU for 24 hrs because they didn't have a room for me. When they finally got me to a room, it was on the trauma floor. The nursing staff was not experienced w/ bariatric patients. Noone encouraged me to walk or assisted me with walking. Noone assisted me in the bathroom. I was also told to shower myself. We didn't get food until day 3..and it was full of sugar! There were even packets of sugar on the tray! The employees who wheel you for testing, etc were very unprofessional. They rammed me into a doorway (very painful)..and they forgot to lock my roommate's bed when they transported her back to her bed (very painful). Also, they left me in a lonely hallway while they ate ribs and talked and swore. When they were asked again to transport me (by the radiologist)..they said "no..not doing it now". When they finally got around to doing it, the girl was picking the ribs out of her teeth while wheeling me in my bed and rammed into the doorway. |

Much busier, nurses very busy, not much time for patients. |

Overall it was good. Surgeon and his assistants were the best, nurses overworked. Use the valet parking, as its the same price, and you don't have to walk half a mile! |

| Only hospital that my insurance would allow this type of surgery...and that my doctor was affiliated with. I really wanted to use the hospital in Dobbs Ferry where my surgeon's office is out of. My insurance would not authorize it there. |

LIKE A FACTORY! It is so busy...and understaffed the care in the regular rooms is terrible at times. Other hospitals that are NOT so large can take them time to tend to the patients needs better once out of ICU. |
| Comments: |
The pre-surgical, surgical and ICU/PACU teams (including the nurses) were FABULOUS! Once I got to a regular room it was basically me fending for myself. No one knew the type of surgery I had, nor it's strict requirements. No one helped me in or out of bed...they would come in and say "YOU HAVE TO GET UP AND WALK"....but never offer assistance, or simply say "Let your family help you". Well, my mother in law (being a nurse for 20+ years) felt appauled at that last comment. She would never let any visitors take responsibility for a patient getting in and out of bed. If something happens to that patient it falls back on the on-call nurse and assistant. She was really upset that they would not offer help...but demanded you move. My mother & mother in law were the ones to get me initially up and out of bed moving. My mother in law being a nurse, knew what to do with all my IV lines, drains and catheter while I walked. There was no way at all I could do it alone. Some of the nurses were "pleasant" on the regular floors...but my experience mostly was a few who were simply aggravated with their jobs, overworked...and annoyed at everything. I am sorry...but, if you are a patient and in pain...you need someone that can be forceful enough to get you up and moving...but caring enough not to be mean about it. I just had major surgery...and some of the nurses could CARE LESS. I think they need a little reminder course that pain is NOT pleasant...and they need a little more sympathy when working with surgical patients.
Overall....due to the care I received in the regular room (after I got out of ICU/PACU...because they took great care of me)...I would seriouslyt think twice about using this hospital ever again. I never got ONE sponge bath, or asked if I wanted one the entire time I was in the hospital (except one night in ICU/PACU)....if I hadn't brought baby wipes with me I would have stunk! My mother would come everyday and cleanse me....and then wash my hair over the sink in the room. If it wasn't for my family being there for me I would have been really stuck. |

I just feel this hospital is one of the best in the country and it has that reputation. I know that if anything when haywire they would be able to fix it. I feel that because it is a teaching hospital it is better equiped to handle emergenices better then say a Community Hospital. |
| Comments: |
I heard alot of people saying this wasn't a good hospital, that it was dirty etc. But I must say I didn't find any of that it was very clean, staff was very helpful, professional and nice. They responded very quickly to call bells etc. I would highly recommend this hospital to people. |

WOW. The PACU unit is out of this world. Everyone was extremely professional and courteous. Although you have curtains for privacy there, the nurses check on patients often. |

| Comments: |
My stay at WMC had its ups and downs the ICU unit was very noisy so it was difficult to get any real rest once I got to a regular room this improved somewhat. The staff for the most part treated me well with one exception of a nurse that said some very inappropriate things to me. They were very responsive when I called for things that I needed. Those who choose to go here could certainly do a lot worse. |
