How Selected: My Surgeon works out of it. He also said that if I really truly needed to be closer he would work out of Stony Brook, which is much closer. But word of mouth rated Winthrop up there.
Comments: The girls in the ASU unit were absolutely wonderful. The orderlies were great and caring as well. EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT HOSPITAL.

Comments: They are NOT sensitive to bariatric patients at all. I spoke w/ my surgeon about this - he's newly appointed director of bariatric surgery, knowing him, for this point on, everyone else's experience will be pleasant.

How Selected: i work for winthrop and I am not in the medical field but when I was sick the nursing staff was great. I was admiited twice for gall bladder and for when I had my baby and both times I felt at home
Competitors: i originally had my baby at stonybrook because my dr's had left winthrop and relocated at stonybrook. I trusted them but when I went in to get induced, it was the worst experience. The rooms were old and dirty, the staff was rude. I was hooked up to a cathera and had to go to the bathroom very badly, the lpn gave me the hardest time about it because i had to use the bed pan, it was embarrassing for me but they didn't make me feel comfortable at all. They also allowed me to go home with an infection from the c section so I had to be readmitted at winthrop to get healed properly.
Comments: winthrop is a great hosptial. I have no quams in ever having to go there ever.

How Selected: Through a flyer that I received regarding a seminar they where offering for WLS, I meet Dr Vithanathan at this seminar and was on my way from there even though I didknow it a the time (I was curious at 1st)
Competitors: I live 10min walk from Long Island Jewish / Northshore University Hospital which I would not consider as a possibilty after dealing with this hospital for other reasons, I would rather drive the 15/20 min (Very happy with this choice/Winthrop)
Comments: Winthrop has an assume staff Starting with Dr Vithiananthan and his staff all the way throught to recover and discharge I felt as if my needs where being looked after. To this day I'm impressed with the hospitals calls to follow up on how I was doing next couple days after being released

How Selected: i searched for the most qualified lapriscopic surgeon in this area. I did not want to go to North shore manhassett. i found Dr. V and was very happy
Competitors: winthrop was comprable to north shore ans much better then any other local hospitals
Comments: The recovery room Nurses were great. i had one problem with a Nurse in the icu step down unit ater my second surgery, but you always find one, besides her all others were excellent. Besides that there was one guy who worked in radiology who liked to make fun of me as i was going down for my tests.

How Selected: My surgeon is affiliated with this hospital and with HIP, you are pretty limited to where you can go and who you can see.
Competitors: THE BEST!!!
Comments: The people are kind, caring, compassionate and have a sense of humor. I always had questions answered in a way that I understood. I wish the food was served hotter but then, I ate so slow, I guess it did not matter much. They really tried to feed me things that I could tolerate, when I needed something different, I got it!. I was there through the blackout and I have to say, they did not miss a beat. They have special beds for patients like us and it was comfy. I do wish that they could have kept the visitors down the hall quiet. What a bunch of animals!!!! Still, the care was good and everyone so knowledgable and my surgeon ROCKS!!! Dr. Vithiananthan and his staff are the BEST!!!
