Multi Security: Excellent Privacy: Excellent Pain Medication: Excellent
Quiet: Excellent Visiting: Excellent Staff Responsive: Excellent

How Selected: My physician does his Lap Bands here
Competitors: I would go here again and even though they were not a fairly new hospital, it was nice.
Comments: Small, older building that is making many improvements. All of the staff seem to strive for excellence, they are JCAHO accredited which means a lot to me. Really nice and well trained staff. The Xray department needs either more help or an improved system of caring for the patient's needs, but hopefully that will get better one day. Long wait times in Xray were really angering patients.

How Selected: Only Hospital for WLS that is used by my surgeon that takes TRICARE. The hospital name has been recently change to Dallas Regional Medical Center.
Competitors: n/a
Comments: The hospital recently merged with another Mesquite hospital and nursing staff was being swaped between the two. This resulted in much confusion among the staff and many WLS pre-surgery mistakes. I was completely ignored by the nursing staff. My first meal consisted of all the items not on a WLS patient's diet such as ice cream and full sugar jello. When I complained to the nurse she said there was nothing she could do. The OR staff was great. All the rooms on the OR floor are private so that was a plus. Staff grumpy and complained to me (and I am lying in a hospital bed) about how upset they were about the merger with the other hospital. My nurse the first day of surgery had just been sent over from the other hospital and she did not know the routine of WLS pre-op and forgot to give me a blood thinner. This caused a huge stir as I was about to enter surgery. It only came to light when I asked the OR nurse if they were going to give me a blood thinner and she responded that I should have been given one before I was sent to OR. I would not recommend this hospital. Maybe once they complete their merger and assign the combined staffs to the right hospital and train them on procedures it will be ok but right now, in this transition period I think it is downright dangerous!

How Selected: Where my insurance paid for.
Competitors: Overall the environment was clean, the rooms were private, but small. A bit cramped with the recliner for my hubby, but we managed just fine.
Comments: Most staff were slow to respond. When I called for a resp therapist to check my ox saturation, it took 45 mins to get someone in the room. I had to call 3 times. I had to ask for juice and broth the morning after. Didn't get a tray. I will say that I don't recall being asked if I needed anything when I did interact with the staff. Noone ever looked at my incisions, check my lungs etc....But, being a nurse I just managed my ownself pretty much. Had a wonderful private duty nurse with me at all times!! My hubby was the greatest help! Their use of the intercom was extremely LOUD and excessive. Couldn't sleep for being awakened with them practically Yelling in my ears! They never asked me if I wanted to walk, etc. As I think about it, they were not the best place I've stayed as a patient. I'd hate to be a patient there that had any issues develop that didn't know enough to bring it to someone's attention. It could be a bad scenario, for sure.
