The first time I met him, he was giving a mandatory pre-op seminar, that we had to attend before we could even get an appointment to see a UCLA bariatric surgeon. My first impression was of how intelligent yet down to earth he was, answering so many questions during the seminar.
The front desk staff are basic, not overly polite/ kind - the only let down I really encountered. Also, there was another mandatpry pre-op nutrition class/ quiz and I travelled all the way to UCLA and it had been cancelled but it was not updated on the website.
The team, lead nurse, dietitian, psch evaluator and co ordinator, are all great.I have to state that I would email the lead nurse and get a response within hours and the same of the dietitian, post-op. I mail her and she answers immediately.
There... [Click here for more] was nothing to dislike about him that I encountered. He is very strict about your pre-op weight loss, whether your insurance requires it or not. I think that is fantastic to see. So, if you can't do it, he isn't the one for you.
Aftercare is taken very seriously, they want to see you again and again, for life. They even have a programme where if you don't have insurance, they will see you for a nominal amount post surgery.
The structured aftercare involves seeing the Doc when you want, unlimited dietitian contact, nurse contact, baraiatric support meetings held regularly. They also want you to have a great PCP to work alongside them. But, if you didn't he wouldn't have allowed the surgery,
The risks of surgery were taken seriously, I know depending on your weight, different things were in place (some heavier patients I met had clot catchers) - and, you had to take your consent form home and study it and bring it back once it had been read and signed.
I rate him 10/10, and both surgical competence and bedside manner are great.
One of his big things is talking people out of surgery, and he even came up to me the day of surgery and said - if you're not sure - don't do it. I had discussed that I had experienced some doubts, but why I was doing it and he said. "Good" (as in me having doubts, lol). He wants us to question everything, not just like a converyor belt of patients,

my first impression was a good one. seemed to know his stuff and wanted me to be clear of what I was getting myself into. i really liked his bedside manner. i found him to be upbeat and funny. This means a great deal to me. Anyone can study and follow the procedure...but can they make you smile? build trust? after all, he is in the drivers seat during the whole thing. I really need to trust the guy. The only bummer was that since surgery, I have been dealing with another surgeon during follow up calls. I guess he is not on call and let others handle those situations. I did see him face to face during my 2 week follow up appt which was good. Posted on 10/21/2009 |

He is great, UCLA was awesome, very caring and proactive. I had Kaiser, so there was some things I had to take care of myself, but I stayed on top of things and all was fine. I did have a complication, and they brought over a specialist from the VA hospital just to observe as they wanted to have all knowledge available to them. I also liked that I was at a teaching hospital and was giving back to someone. Posted on 09/25/2009 |

I liked Doctor Mehran. He was funny and made me feel comfertable. The only thing that is slightly negative I guess is that he seemed to rush or always seem like he was in a hurry. Posted on 04/28/2009 |

My first impression was Dr. Mehran was energetic and funny.rn My impression changed when I became aware of how seriously he take the safety of the patients pre- and post-op. Although he did not have a lot of time to spend during apppointments, he was very responsive by email when I had questions and concerns.rn The clinic staff was very thorough even though they are extremely busy. Maria Harrison keeps the place running like a well oiled machine.rn What I liked the least I liked about Dr. Mehran is he was always in a hurry. Also, for my own good, he was strict with me but it worked out in the end.rn Dr. Mehran is part of an outstanding team of professionals.rn Overall I would rate this program an "A".rn Posted on 01/10/2009 |

My first impression was that I really liked Dr. Amir. He trys to be funny sometimes. But, he is a stickler for losing weight before having surgery. He feels this shows that you are serious and determined in having this surgery and committed to your success. His research shows greater overall weightloss success when losing weight first. I had my surgery 12/12/07 and Dr Mehran was great he gave me a hard time about the surgery and why I wanted it. but it was for my own good... he was also good with my husband and very pateint...my hubby did not meet the doctor until the day of the surgery and I had a few minor complications and he came out and explained every thing to my husband and assured him every thing was ok... Dr. Mehran and his staff came to see me the next day and they were all great. I could not ask for a better team of people. now some of the nurse at the hospital is another story!!! My first impression of Dr Mehran was he is quite funny, very warm and was constantly trying to talk me OUT of having the surgery. After further time I understand this is a process of weeding out the patients that are using this as a crutch or a miracle pill. During the surgery process I found him to be very informative and incredibly nice to my mother who was with me prior to and in recovery. I adore his office staff and Maria the program coordinator. I love that they try to guilt you into the support groups. I am 3 1/2 mos post op and am having issues with nausea. He has ordered a battery of tests and insisted I bring this up with my therapist as this could be emotional or mental as well as a physical issue.rnI think he is an excellent Bariatric Surgeon, cannot say enough good... [Click here for more] things about him and HIGHLY recommend him to any one in the LA area.rnMy only negativity stems from he is very hard to get hold of and you must go thru Maria for pretty much everything...
