I think that Dr. Smith is the best thing since sliced bread!!! He is such a sincere and caring person. He really care alot about his patients and making them feel comfortable. I lost 100lbs my first 10 months. I would recommend Dr. Smith to anyone that is considering have the gastric bypass. I am very grateful that i was able to have him as my surgeon. Overall he is the best in Atlanta!!! Posted on 08/08/2006 |

I met Dr. C. Daniel Smith @ Emory Bariatrics on July 12, 2005. My husband Chris & I both thought Dr. Smith was very straight to the point, educated & very caring for his patients. My first though was WOW HE'S TALL !!! I am 5' 3" tall & it seemed like he was well over 7 ft. I was very impressed with his vast knowledge & helpful manner. Over all on a scale of 1 - 10 I would rate him easily a 10+. My husband & I both know we made the right choice in choosing Dr. C. Daniel Smith & cannot wait to get this show on the road !!! If you are looking for a caring, compassionate & well educated doctor..Look no more! Posted on 05/04/2006 |

I had RNY on 1/24/05 with Dr. C Daniel Smith as my suregeon. I think he is awewsome. I requested to be his first patient of the day so I could pray with him before surgery and he honored that request. I only saw Dr Smith a couple of times while in the hospital, but Beau one the residents at Emory took wonderful care of me, as well as DR Sethna. Thank you all so much!
Although I am having some post-op problems which they tell me is normal I'm very glad I chose Dr Smith. Good luck to everyone.

Initially i thought Dr. C Daniel Smith was a great doctor but now that I am two months post op I still think he is a great doctor. I have a problem with his office staff and the bariactric clinic at Emory.
These people are so cold hearted and uncaring that i hate to call them. All they want to do is to argue with you and prove they are right about everything.
Although Dr. Smith is a great doctor I tell everybody to "STAY AWAY". You most likely would lose your life at the hospital or be treated very badly by his staff. Posted on 05/04/2006 |

01-25-04 I recently attended a seminar for Emory Bariatrics. They are the only ones around that are still doing VBG. While my ins does not have a doc supervised wt loss diet in the last six months as a requirement, they still won't approve w/out it. Had I known this I would have been doing so w/ my PCP. Now I am likely held off another six to eight months. I see my PCP tomorrow and I will see if there is anything she can do to speed this up.
I have my first consult with Dr. Burrowes on November 6, 2003.
I am back from my consult. I was very impressed w/ Dr. B. He is obviously very intelligent and wants what is best for his patients. My only issue was that he says he does six WLS surgeries but will only do RNY or Fobi. So which is it? Six or two? I thought his nurse... [Click here for more] was really nice and friendly. The woman who came in the room right before I left to give me some extra info was argumentative and rude. She tried to tell me that I had to have a Dr. supervised WL program for BCBS - that is for the PPO. So far, the HMO does not require it. I left the office feeling discouraged and mad at myself for not setting up consults w/ other docs months ago. Now I will have to wait another few months to get in w/ anyone else for comparision.

Well dressed, nice personality, tall and thin.
I've heard some negative from a friend about her friend who is "dying" from the surgery. I think you have to have faith and trust your judgement.
Everyone so far seems to be pleasant but I had a long wait of an hour and a half over my appt. time. I also had miscommunication regarding scheduling my pysch appt.
So far nothing I dislike about Dr. Smith. He seems very knowledgeable and gives a lot of information with web sites to check out. He has an intense aftercare packet regarding amount of food allowed, type of food and number of weeks before you progress which is very informative.
He addressed the risk quite well and suggested research and support groups as a good start and to learn as much info as possible. Posted on 01/20/2004 |

My first impression was that Dr. Smith was very friendly and has a good bed-side manner. He seems to be comforting and he listens when you talk - he doesn't absently nod his head and on to the next point.
My impression is still good. I like Dr. Smith personnally, but more importantly, I respect him and his ability.
Office staff is good. Debra works very hard and is in my opinion short-staffed. She is difficult to get through to and sometimes you have to leave many messages but she gets the job done. I can imagine if everyone else Dr. Smith sees was as impatient as me that she is stressed as well!
I can't give a total point of view in respect to Dr. Smith yet, because my surgery is next week. I will update more when that is over with.
So far I would rate Dr. Smith... [Click here for more] as Good, but will update after the surgery.
Post-OP - Four surgeries later and a very good possibility that I will be having a fifth in less than a month - my review is poor. I am an optimistic person and I go into every situation praying for the best, but with research and good info. to back my positiveness. I could not -- not in my wildest dreams have dreamed a nightmare this bad. I had the surgery - then Dr. Smith was gone for a week. During this week - I had 2 other surgeries -yes, that is three surgeries in a week. I felt like a file number with no name. I had a leak from the surgery that STILL is not corrected and I am on a feeding tube "until it heals on it's own" and at my next doctor visit, that will be 2 MONTHS!!! That is 2 months with NOTHING in my mouth to eat or drink, not water, nothing. I am now trying to focus on healing and not resentment as I believe our feelings affect healing. I will update more in about a month or two. Bottom line --- overall rating is VERY DISAPPOINTED. Beyond the problems that occurred, staff/doctor could make things go smoothly not to mention easier in general - not likely. EVERYTHING turns into an ordeal!!
7-27-03 This is almost 5 months post-op. I have basically recovered from the surgery itself and am focusing on healing and following dr. orders. My advise to anyone considering this surgery is to weigh all of the risks and realize any of us can have complications (very serious ones) and some will die from this surgery. I had everything going for me going into this surgery - no diabetes, and had astounding recoveries from a hysterectomy and gallbladder removal earlier. I thought my recovery from this would be the same - I think I was part of the 6% that had complications (serious ones) but that the hernia itself was the complication. After that, I believe several things could have been avoided had I had proper care. I found out who performed my second and third surgeries when I received my bill in the mail! This is inexcusable!
I have lost 62 pounds to date - down from 260 to 198 and am doing good. I am excercising more and trying to do it all "by the book." I haven't tried sugars because I know we aren't suppose to and I have noticed however, that I dump even with starches. White bread, potatoes, rice - it all makes me dump - even milk to a point. So, I try to get the protein in first and then I usually am full.

Dr. C. Daniel Smith is head of Briatrics at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He is the most kind, sensitive, knowledgeable doctor that I have ever been seen by. He is confident and as a result he helps me to be confident. He is detailed, thorough. He has set up a bariatric team that you meet even before seeing him. He provides you with written materials and led me through every step of the way. I recommend him highly.
The staff is excellent from the secretaries to the coordinator to the nutritionist. The professionalism and kindness is awsome.
He was very straightforward regarding the risks at my initial visit and there were two surgeons to discuss all of my tests and reiterated the risk to me and my family before giving me a surgery date.
As stated above is is competent... [Click here for more] and has superb bedside manners.
