My surgeon is actually Dr. Chin in Concord, CA, but he's new and wasn't listed. Dr. Otero is his partner.
He's fairly new at the John Muir Weight Loss Center in Concord, CA. I met with him today, and was very impressed with him. He was extremely understanding, answered all of my questions very patiently, and was very positive about it all. Very soft spoken.

I had never been in the hospital or had any major health problems, other than being overweight. I have a little arthritis and a weird thing called Charcot joint, but otherwise. I really didn't know what to expect.
Dr. Otero is very professional and reviewed everything with me. I felt comfortable with him as a doctor right away.
I was further encouraged by a comment made by the doctor who did my endoscopy who mentioned that he dealt with post-op problems from weight loss surgeries from various, prestigious hospitals and had never had one of Dr. Otero's (or the other doctor that works with Dr. Otero) patients return with a problem. That was a HUGE vote of confidence.
The center in Concord has excellent pre-op training and resources. I've attended one suppot group so far and plan... [Click here for more] to attend as many as possible in the future. Lots of help.
I think Dr. Otero is great and I highly recommend him and the weight loss center at John Muir, Concord!
I don't know how to respond to questions regarding bedside manner, etc. I would think it depends on both parties. I wasn't looking for a best friend when I was selecting a surgeon. I wanted somebody with whom I felt comfortable, who would answer my questions and was highly competent at his/her job. Dr. Otero met every expectation for me, with a little humor now and then...can't beat that.

When I first met Dr. Otero I thought he had a very heart wrming smile. He very carefully went over all the risks associated with WLS surgery and encoraged questions. I liked how when I asked a few questions he looked right at me and it instantly gave me a feeling that he is genuine and wants his patients fully educated in the WLS journey.
Dr. Otero was very straight with me about my surgery and he felt that the sleeve was my best option at this time. It was also the procedure that I was hoping for after hearing about all of the possibilities. Dr. Otero made me feel like I was important to him and that he wants me to have great success. This is why I selected John Muir Medical Center and Dr. Otero, for that personal touch.
Seeing Dr. Otero before surgery definitely calmed... [Click here for more] me down and while I don't remember seeing him after surgery, I was told that he did talk with me. But the next day when he came to see me and agreed to release me he was so fantastic. I liked the fact that Dr. Otero smiles, his entire delivery method makes me feel calm, confident and positive. I can tell you that his surgical skills are great - I only needed pain meds once when I was home...nothing after that.
I saw Dr. Otero for my first 2 week post-op appointment and when I saw him, he greeted me with a great big hug and made me feel so wonderful. He was pleased with my weight loss and he is such a terrific cheerleader. I would totally recommend him to anyone that is thinking about having WLS surgery. Dr. Otero along with his great team at JMuir of Anne Timberlake and Dolora make me feel special and give me the added confidence to make my new tool work. Anne has been there for me each and every step and is so responsive and supportive. They are all OUTSTANDING!!!

Dr. Otero, well wht can I say about this Dr. great, I recieved more info from him in the short time I have spoke to him regarding this up coming surgery, then I have when I was going to UCSF.
The staff is also great Anne Timberlake is the best, she has helped me with getting prepared for this, helping out with my paperwork.. Posted on 04/03/2008 |

Dr. Otero and his staff are very approachable people. They didn't judge me. I just cannot say enough great things about Dr. Otero and his staff. My whole entire experience with him has been wonderful. He and his staff are "feel good" type people. Each time I see them, they give me hugs, praise, and high fives. I just love their caring and compassionate personalities. They have a great stuctured program with everything a person would need for before and aftercare. His surgical competence and bedside manner is awesome. In a scale from 1-10 with 10 being the best, I would give Dr. Otero and his staff a million. My first impression was that he was very professional and analytical. He assessed my situation and gave me a thorough review of my options. He has a warm and wonderful smile and is confident in his approach. I liked his faith in me. His office staff is wonderful. Anne is knowledgeable and compassionate, Shirley is a WLS success with personal experience. He stresses aftercare and personal responsibility (but he gives you the tools). He carefully outlined the risks, he was direct an complete but not scary. He requires a letter from you in your own words describing your understanding of your risks, rewards, and responsibility. I like that. His surgical skill is excellent and he has a marvelous track record and a great reputation among other doctors. Can't say I saw much of... [Click here for more] him bedside, I was out the next day! No complaints but I wish he had checked on me in the hospital. He was in surgery all day. He did come by but I don't remember.
