Well, as a nurse who works for the same company, I had seen and worked with Dr. Read a few times and had a feel for his personality and bed side manor. I have a true respect for physicicans in general as I know the amount of time and work they put into caring for their patients. They are their best and worst enemy in as much as the passion they have for giving the best care to their patients can also drive them to be completely exhausted and drained. So, when I was first exposed to Dr. Read I was impressed with the way he was calm, yet animated and surprisingly jovial. Warm to all and not afraid to get in the mix and do his own work. Definately not a 'pass the buck' kind of guy. I have yet to meet a patient of his who did not like him or have anything negative to say. He is renound... [Click here for more] in our area for his skill and intellect as well, which is evident in his patient outcomes.
At this point my impression of his has only grown to be more impressed and thankful that I have access to a surgeon and staff that are very dedicated to big people and helping them get their lives back!
Honestly the only thing about Dr. Read that is a turnoff is that he is a bit repetetive. Remember though that the best way to teach is through repetition...so I really can't fault him or his staff/program for this.
Future patients should know that he is willing to go through hell for you. That is really saying something. I know this is true because I have seen it time and again with patients in the hosptial setting as well as with friends who have had complications relating to WLS.
The program that Dr. Read heads is very defined and has a true focus on the patients care during the entire process. I feel that they have a real interest in procuring success for each person, so they have sculpted an aftercare program that follows the patient extensively for the remainder of time. Heavily for the 1st few years and then as a support to the PCP aferward. Of course they emphasis is on communication between the patient/PCP/surgeon or WLS center.
The risk of WLS is addressed multilpe times throughout the process of application, education period, pre-op period and post-op.
I give this physician and program an 'A'...they are fabulous!

My husband and I were really impressed by Dr. Read when we attended the Informational Meeting he conducted. We found him to be upfront with everything about the surgery. But, what really sold us was his approach to WLS - a life long program and committed to helping each individual patient. He did not give us the impression that he was so far above us little people, but very down to earth. Posted on 05/21/2008 |

Dr. Read has a pony tail (gray) and is good at making eye contact and shaking hands. I really trusted him when I went in to surgery which I think is really important.
This program does have a aftercare program which I think is very important. I think when I was dealing with Dr. Read he was very open and honest about the risks. I would reccomend him he did a good job with me.
We did have one issue come up and I think it is because the surgery before me ran way over so I was almost 2 hours late getting into surgery but no one ever came and told my support person that I was out of surgery. So she had to wait and worry for hours. There was also apparently some mix up about the waiting room she was supposed to be in. I was fine and did well but that was a horrible worrisome... [Click here for more] time for her and my family to go through.

I am in the pre-surgery stages and have met with Dr. Read. I think that the Samaritan Bariatric Program is the best in the state. I really appreciate their approach and "recipe" for success. Their attention to detail, and special care with each patient sure makes me feel good about choosing this program.
Denise (front desk) is always so encouraging, and helpful! She's been great about getting me scheduled for all of my appt's and keeping me on track.
Susan (program coordinator) is great to work with, she's understanding, encouraging, a great listener and there to answer any/all of your questions. She keeps you aware of each stage you are in and what is coming next. She's also quite funny!
Dr. Read (surgeon) is hilarious, informative, and really sets you at ease. I suffer... [Click here for more] from white coat hypertension ;) and he definately made me feel alot more comfortable as he went through the process and answered any questions I had about before, during and after. I am confident in choosing him.
Dr. Carol Sillars (psychologist) is a wonderful therapist. She's been great to discuss the emotional aspects of this surgery, both before and after, and am looking forward to continuing my sessions with her to ensure success!
Support Group- I have only attended one support group but have met many people on OH from my area that have had their surgery done by Dr. Read, and again, to reiterate, have only heard wonderful things!

Dr Read and the Samaritan Bariatric Team (Susan, Bobbie, Kim, Denise) have been fantastic to work with. The orientation programs (open forum/general information, Dr Read's presentation of the procedure/risks/etc) are well organized and provide repeated opportunities for anyone's questions to be answered. The office staff is always available for questions, no matter how random, and respond to phone messages promptly. The program has a very strong emphasis on after care including annual (and obviously more frequent in the first year) labs and follow-ups, nutritional counsel, and monthly support group meetings. My only frustration has been delays and late running appointments... Dr Read tends to get pulled in many directions between two offices and in-hospital duties and his appointment... [Click here for more] schedule tends to feel that strain. Dr Read is not going to mince words with you... you will get the straight story with no hesitation to lay it on the line... so be prepared to be held accountable for your part of this process... ultimately it will be all about your discipline and he is going to make sure that you know everything possible before he cuts you loose.

I feel very confident with Dr. Read. I've had my consultation with him and his informational seminar. He looks you right in the eye when he talks to you. At the info seminar he stayed until every last question was answered (the 1.5 hr seminar ended up lasting almost 3 hrs.) I was impressed with his patients and understanding.
Susan is wonderful! Very helpful. I'm a worry wart and they've been very understanding with my concerns. They defiantly know their stuff.
Aftercare in this program is VERY important to the whole bariatric team. They want to see you often and they want to care for you for the rest of your life.
