I really enjoyed meeting with Dr.Kane Sr. He answered all my questions, without hesitation. I only waited less than 10 minutes in the office. He even drew on my stomach where the incision would be. He was my first choice of a surgeon, I feel lucky that I got him. Posted on 11/10/2003 |

My first (and only) impression was that he was in a rush and/or couldn't be bothered with my questions. He kept saying that "they were bugging him to get to the hospital". I'm going forward with my surgery because he and his team have great reputations; but I honestly felt (these are my own impressions, I know lots of people feel he's got a great bedside manner)that he had a "been there, done that, got the t-shirt" type attitude towards my questions. I know that he's old and that he's been doing this for a long time, but this is all new to ME! I waited 2 hours to see him for 10 minutes. I will post more after surgery when I hope to have many wonderful experiences to relate.
After surgery I do have to say that Dr. Kane is a very compassionate, caring surgeon. When I was in... [Click here for more] the hospital, he was always very upbeat and cheerful. When he took my drain out he answered all my questions. I'm not crazy about his office staff...when you call in to make appointments or with questions, you never know whom you're speaking with. No one seems happy to answer the phone. They also don't seem to give their names when you call in with questions or when they call back. Make sure to get the name of the person you spoke with when making appointments or when they answer questions. When visiting the office, a few of the ladies at the front desk didn't look happy to be there at all. I don't need to be best friends with his staff, but a smile goes a long way to make people feel welcome.
While I am only 9 days out right now, I feel that Dr. Kane has a good bedside manner and an excellent reputation for surgical competence. I wouldn't choose any other group but this one for WLS.

Dr. Kane Sr has been doing this surgery forever and was extremely willing to answer the dozens of questions I had about the procedure. Even 5 days before my surgery when I had last minute fears and questions he scheduled me for an office visit and answered every last question and concern. He has vry late evning hours (as late as 10pm) which was extremely convenient for me.
He has a great friendly demeanor and gave my husband a thorough idea of how the surgery went as I was in recovery. The follow up visits are brief and you do spend more time dealing with his staff than the doctor. Also while it is certainly worth the wait to have his expertise available to you, be prepared to wait sometimes 90 minutes past your appointment time (on 2-3 occasions) so patience is needed with... I am only 7 weeks out from my surgery, but aftercare seems not to be a priority with this group. I did have a wound opening this week and the office fit me in immediately, so response to critical issues is there, but for standard follow ups, the attention to detail or need for bloodwork/nutritional followups seems to be unimportant.
I am extremely pleased with my open RNY and am confident he was the right choice of surgeon, the best available in my area in my opinion. The only reason to rate him a B+ instead of A+ is that the surgery and the surgery alone seems to be his focus. He seemed unwilling or unconcerned with other issues like diabetes control in the hospital, post op bloodwork, etc. and pretty much dismissessome aftercare concerns that I wish he'd been more responsive to. Luckily I have a wonderful primary care physician who has shown herself willing to step in with whatever might be lacking with the aftercare here.
There are several surgeons in this group and it was a little confusing in the hospital as my daily visits from the surgeons were with all different ones each day. It would have been nice instead to only have 1 or 2 to deal with and expect instead of trying to remember names of new ones each day. Still overall I'd highly recommend Dr. Kane to anyone who asked. Any of the less than positive experiences I had are definitely outweighed by the confidence I had that Dr. Kane was the most thorough and most expereinced surgeon for the open RNY in my area.

I was really anxious to get to the office on time and I got there an hour early! It turned out that he was an hour late, but unlike other doctor appointment where the doctors tend to be late, I didn't mind. I guess after waiting so long to get to this point, the wait didn't bother me. Dr. Kane Sr. was very nice. He told me that I'm a very good candidate for this surgery and he also mentioned that he's glad I'm doing it now rather than waiting later. He told me that he would do the procedure laproscopic and hopefully the gallblader won't have to be taken out. He wanted to make sure that I was aware of the risks involved with this surgery & the long term implications. The staff in his office is also very nice. Overall 2 thumbs up! Posted on 05/24/2003 |

My husband and I met with Dr. Kane last week. We didn't see him until close to 11p.m. I had my list of questions, he answered them all, drew with pen on my stomach how long the incision would be. I must admit.. I thought it would've been a little longer so I was pleasantly surprised at the shorter length he drew. I wasn't there long. He's old. After speaking with him I found him to be very knowledgeable and he has over 30 years of experience in WLS. My PCP said he is very active and loves to ride horses every morning. The staff seems helpful. We'll see how it goes with the after care. Posted on 02/28/2003 |

Forget BTC, the Doc I met with did not have enough experience, and kept talking politics with my husband. Chose the professional practice of Dr. Kane, whom my PCP recommended. Has been doing WLS for years, his son and three other doc's are in practice. I am very confident in him. Down to Psych eval and stress/pulmonary test...then get a date. Posted on 02/09/2003 |

I think Dr. Kane Sr. is one of the nicest people I know. Its been a super long time since I had the WLS's but I remember the experience to be a good one going to his office. I was 12(I'm 35 now) when I first went to see him. My mom had WLS done by him and we wanted it done for me as well. He said I was too young at the time and so as soon as I turned 14 he said I could have it. I weighed 320 and I think at the time, I was the youngest to have had it. I lost all the weight and for the first time in my life I was accepted. I did gain the weight back and when I was 17 I returned for a new procedure that included a ring(not one that can be expanded). I again lost the weight and gained the weight back. I am still thrilled that I had that chance to lose the weight back then and sooo thankful... [Click here for more] to Dr. Kane that he did the surgery. My mom also had the surgery done twice and gained the weight back but says the same thing...thats shes happy she had it. We feel that we would have gained a lot more had we not had the surgery. Happily 4 years ago I found a diet that lets you eat whatever you want protein and fat wise but when it comes to carbs, you only eat the ones that don't raise your blood sugar levels. I lost all the weight and have no problems keeping it off at all and am on this site looking for info on skin removal. I still would highly recommend this surgery if you can't find a way to get control over food. I personally have considered trying to get some help in getting a reversal or something to make me able to not get sick so often since I can handle eating normal and all now...but not sure if I can get any surgery to help with that.
