I have not yet met Dr. Oliphant yet I am still in the screening process. I have however read over all testimonials from this site on him. From what I have read I feel that this is the surgeon for me. I will let you know more after I meet him. Posted on 08/05/2008 |

Dr. Oliphant was very warm and inviting when I first met him. Even when I was in the hospital when he made his rounds he treated me like I was his only patient. His office staff is amazing, they are a wonderful support system for the surgery (Before and After!). I would highly recommend Dr. Oliphant to anyone thinking of having this surgery!
If I had to rate him on a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give him a 20!!! Posted on 05/04/2008 |

Today i finally met with Dr. O . I was really nervous because everyone said he is very buosness like and matter of fact. I was suprised i thought he was great. he laid out all the facts and the risks. He definatly wants you to know this is a forever life style change. he really laid out the truth and the facts.I can tell he is very serious about the risks of the surgery, But he also let me know all the benefits. He wants you to know this is not cosmetic. I thought he was wonderful. He is very busy man and i think he was in a litttle bit of a hurry today but he didnt rush us out. he was great. Posted on 11/15/2007 |

My first impression of Dr. Oliphant was that he was very calm and very matter-of-fact. He went over all the risks of the surgery and didn't sugar-coat anything. Since I've been in the hospital, all I've heard is how great he is, and how hard he works. He came in today on Saturday, his day off to check on me, the nurses say he always comes in to check on his gastric bypass surgeries. I would definately recommend him! Posted on 11/10/2007 |

I have know Dr. Oliphant for nearly 15 years (not personally, I worked at his hospital) and he has always been extremely friendly and very personable. I have heard nothing but good things about him and his skills. He is head of Trauma surgery at Carle Hospital.
My first visit with him regarding my surgery went well. I heard from others that he gives you a very grim image about the surgery and is very serious and attempts to scare you with the details of the surgery and life after along with being extremely honest about the mortality rate. I prepared my wife for this so as to not freak her out, but we have become very educated about the procedure and the upcoming lifestyle change that every thing he had to say was redundant to what we already had learned. This was a great... [Click here for more] feeling, because it reinforced that what I was reading and researching was correct.
He is very passionate about aftercare and emphasizes that if you are not willing to follow his instructions and do what he says then you should probably move on and either look for another surgeon or not have the surgery.
I appreciate his candor as well as his great personality. With him being head of Trauma Surgery, I can't think of anyone I would rather have inside my abdomen should something go south.
Before Surgery:
I would rate Dr. Oliphant's Bedside manner an 8 and his surgical competence 9 (based on title/accomplishments and reputation).

Will update...surgery scheduled OCT 18, 2007

Dr. Oliphant is very professional. It is obvious he cares about what he is doing. At first he was very by the book and formal, but once I got to know him he warmed up. He is genuine and has high expectations for his clients-he expects you to follow his orders. All of his staff are very friendly and caring. His nurse Ann is outstanding! They do stress aftercare, if you can not commit to do it they may not do the surgery. They were very up front about every aspect of the surgery. I had to go in for a 4 hour class about the surgery and after. They covered everything from what to expect before and after including all the tubes and wires I would be hooked up to ,to the risks and complications. They are easy to get a hold of if I need something. Overall ,even though I have had... [Click here for more] some complications with my surgery that some people do not have, they have been really great both surgically and with bedside manner.

Doctor Oliphant has literally saved my life! Not just with the RNY surgery but with his care afterwards. I have had a few complications ... an incarcerated hernia and bad gall bladder, and he also did the surgeries to fix those.
I would reccomend him in a heartbeat! He really cares for his patients and knows just what to do.
My very first impression was that he was not only very professional but made sure that any questions that *I* had were answered beyond the information that the hospital provided. I'd done a large amount of research on my own and I still walked away knowing more. He did not downplay the risks at all, he made sure that I knew how seriously they take this surgery that it is ranked as major and right up there with heart surgery.
I really didn't like that... [Click here for more] he had me sitting up the first night of surgery but you know he was right about it! It did help me begin the healing process and even though I really would rather have just laid in bed I knew that I needed to get up and sit up.
I have friends at the same place I work that have had the same surgery I have, with the same doctor and we have all said the same thing. Even if we had to do it twice to get it right, it would be worth it, and we would never choose another surgeon.
