Dr. M have done over 1,000 cases of WLS since 1970. His rating is excellent that I was able to feel security while he performed the surgery on me. He is a wonderful man with great confidence. He knows his stuff.
I'm deaf. He knows ABC's. I was able to understand him the minute I woke up from the surgery. He said " M O R P H I N E IS COMING" I was in extremely pain and he knew.
He is a wonderful man and answers every questions you may have. He explained everything you need to know even if you're not having LAP BAND or something like that. I only wanted gastric bypass but he explained about LAP BAND anyway to make sure you are still on the same page.
If I had to rate him 1 to 10. I would rate him 10+.
(His people at the WLS program "New Reflection Program"... [Click here for more] in NOrwalk, CA are also WONDERFUL people. They're very friendly, gentle, kind, and list goes on.)
I do not see anything negative as right now. I've had surgery 1 month 7 days ago and is doing wonderful. He was a phone call away when I woke up one morning in extremely pain due to kidney stone and Urinary Tract Infection. He could tell me to go to ER because the way I described the pain... where it was... etc...

Dr Martinez was sweet the first time i met him. He seemed concerned with my struggle to lose weight and was determined to help me build self confidence in myself prior to surgery.
Dr Martinez has some of the best office staff in the world. They are two of the sweetest most hardworking women i have ever met. They were on the phone with my insurance everytime they needed to be and even times they didnt to make sure that things were going the way that they needed to. When i was denied the first time his office staff was so very surprised they pushed my insurance company and grilled them like no other. They got my approval the very next day after sending in an appeal to my insurance company.
Dr Martinez was really straight forward with the risks and complications involving gastric... [Click here for more] bypass. However he reassured me that he would take the best care of me as possible and that i didnt have any reason to worry.
Dr Martinez has wonderful bedside manner, he shows concern and respect for his patients. He is more like family than just a surgeon. He makes sure that his patients are comfortable and well taken care of while in the hospital and after.

He was incredible through the entire process. I had a complication that required me to have a second surgery the week following my bypass and he even came in everyday Thanksgiving week to change and tend to my new wounds. Posted on 06/14/2007 |

I interviewed several surgeons in my research prior to deciding on bypass surgery. I chose Dr. Martinez because he was honest, and obviously well trained. He emphacized the program as a whole, and what my role and resonsibilities would be, rather than making empty promises. He told me that surgery is a tool that I would use to create a healthy lifestyle. He told me that in order to be successful I would need to follow the prescribed post surgical program that included a liquid diet, gradually reintroducing soft and then normal food, in order to allow my new stomach to heal. He also required me to walk each day, beginning during my post surgical hospital stay. He answered all my questions patiently and never made me feel rushed or pressured to make a decision. He invited me... [Click here for more] to attend his patient support group meetings to meet current patients and hear their stories. Every patient at the support group had wonderful things to say about Dr. Martinez. I also personally knew three of his patients, and each of them highly recommended him.
Dr. Martinez impressed me immediately as extremely knowledgeable, supportive and caring. He remains to this day one of the people I most admire. He is generous, kind, and helpful and embraces each and every patient with the same empathy and caring. He is always honest, but never rude or critical. He is, by far, the best physician I have ever had. His follow up care was as thorough and caring as the pre-operative and post-operative care, and I still see him once a year.
Dr. Martinez' office manager, Jana, is also wonderfully suited to her job. She is friendly, caring, sincere, empathetic and extremely knowledgeable and helpful. She listens patiently to each patient and makes time for everyone in her hectic days. She and Dr. Martinez work well together and make an exceptional team. Jana knows the insurance requirements for surgery and was instrumental in securing insurance coverage for me through my carrier.
Dr. Martinez has an ongoing support group that meets regularly, which proves so helpful to new and post operative patients. At the support group meetings "experienced" patients offer support and answer questions for pre-operative patients. This was very helpful to me prior to surgery. I wanted to know what to expect including a realistic picture of side effects and discomfort. So many patients offered their phone numbers and email addresses and told me to call them anytime. I have done the same for other patients, and many of us have even visited patients while they are in the hospital.
Dr. Martinez and the New Reflections program are in my opinion the perfect combination of wonderful, responsive bedside manner, extreme skill and competence coupled with honest guidance. I cannot speak highly enough about this program and how it has changed my life.
I have been heavy all my life, and never imagined that I could one day live in a thin body and feel "normal." On November 15, 1999, I weighed 287 pounds prior to surgery. I lost over 100 pounds within the first year after surgery. I stabilized at around 170 pounds, and stayed at that weight for several months. Then I began to feel my body crave more exercise and as I began to exercise more (and enjoy it!) I lost more weight. I lost an additional 25-30 pounds over the next 6 months, and my weight has remained constant at 142-145 ever since. I was a size 24/26 prior to surgery in 1999. Today, I wear a size 4 or 6, although I have several pairs of slacks in size 2!!!
My best advice to any prospective patient is to thoroughly research the surgery, talk to patients, doctors and health care professionals. Ask questions and then ask more questions. Be sure you are comfortable with what ever procedure you choose, know what your role will be in your recovery, and be willing to take responsibility for your health and your fate and enjoy your life. You are your own best advocate. Dr. Martinez is, in my opinion, the best surgeon.

I was really bless to meet some of his patients in the waiting room before I officially met him. I just listened to gain more knowledge about Dr. Martinez. When I first met him my first impression of Dr. Martinez, was that he was down to earth, knowleable, and was willing to answer any questions that I had.
His staff is very helpful. After speaking to Doctor Martinez, he express that during this type of surgery I could loose blood and that I had a choice to use my own blood prior to the surgery or use the blood banks. Of course I want to use my own, so they have assisted me in accomplishing that goal. I have a two dates to give my own blood(Nov. & Dec.)
Dr. Martinez express the overall risks of surgery very well. Presently I would rate him as a 8. Posted on 10/29/2004 |

He is WONDERFUL, I couldn't have asked for a better person. He made me feel really comfertable and let me know everything was going to be alright. I told me EVERYTHING, including all the risks, but let me know the small percentage of the risks. I was not scared at all, I couldn't wait. He is amazing, my scar is so small!!! Right now I haven't been to norwslk yet to meet the doctor. But Mailyn, the lady that is handling my case is very nice. She gave me the too-free number to call her anytime if I have any questions. She is helping me with all paperwork and the time off from my job. What ever I need she is seeing to it happening.
They are going to pick me up from the airport and take me to the hotel and transfer me back and forth and take care of me until after the surgery and I am on the plan back to Vegas. Posted on 01/19/2003 |

I first met Dr. Martinez when he came to Las Vegas to attend a monthly support group for his patients. I found him to be honest, sincere, and extremely approachable. The next meeting was when I went to Coast Plaza Hospital in Norwalk, CA for an EGD to check the size of my pouch (I am having a revision from a silastic ring gastroplasty in 1995). He reassured me when my anxiety kicked in. He is open with his patients and makes you KNOW he truly cares and understands the dynamics of MO. He is outgoing and witty as well. Great personality for such a wonderful surgeon.
I've spoken to many of his office staff, but primarily with Jana the miracle angel. She is so caring and sincere that you feel even the first time you speak to her that you know she loves what shes does.
Future... [Click here for more] patients should know that if they put their lives in Dr. Martinez's hands, they will be well cared for. After my previous WLS, there was absolutely NO AFTERCARE. With Dr. Martinez the aftercare is indefinite. He requires regular check ups and comes to our town to attend the support groups (I've been to 2 and am very pleased).
Dr. Martinez has addressed the additional risks of a revision and explained what they are. He is very thorough in his pre-op testing, including an upper GI and EGD.
He has an awesome bedside manner. After my experience with 2 other bariatric surgeons, I can vouch for the fact that he is like no other. One of the "other" surgeons is "mean" and seems to enjoy making his patients cry. The other, I never spoke to after I was released from the hospital.
Unfortunately, because my WLS is a revision and I live in another city & state, Dr. Martinez would not perform the surgery until I agreed to stay in town for 10-14 days post op. The added financial burden is going to be tough. I balance this by reminding myself he is only looking out for my best interest. The chances of a leakage are far greater in a revision.
