I was surprised by my first impression of Dr. Owens. He is older than the pictures on his web site. In fact, he was born in 1940. He is a quiet, thoughtful man, and really knows what he is doing. My impression has not had a chance to change yet. I didn't see him today before surgery because the staff had already started the anesthesia. After I woke up in the recovery room, he was still involved in another surgery. But I have spoken with him on the phone, and he is extremely gracious and helpful. The office staff appears to try hard but doesn't follow through on FAXes sent or received. I had to fax things several times. And they weren't that helpful in finding the pre-surgery consultations. Other than that, they also do their best to serve and to be helpful. I think that was the thing... [Click here for more] I liked the least about my experience so far. Future patients should know that he has never lost a patient, that my PCP highly recommends him, and that he is super thorough. He also knows his stuff as well as, if not better than, anyone in the area. He even helped developed some bariatric procedures that are practiced today. He emphasizes aftercare almost more than he does getting ready for surgery, though both are important. While I haven't set up any follow-up appointments yet, the hospital staff did ask me to call his office and set it up to get started. I know that he truly cares about his patients and values aftercare, because he said that he would find a way for any of his patients to follow up, and that he wants to keep hearing from us for years to come. He explained the risks of surgery very well, citing the statistics and his own track record. He was sure that all the proper tests were ordered; and since my blood work was over a month old today (surgery day), he ordered another complete set of blood work just to be sure. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd easily give him a 10+. Both his bedside manner and surgical competence are excellent. I highly recommend Dr. Owens to anyone in Southern California (or anywhere else if the patient wants to travel). This is just my opinion, of course, as well as the opinion of my PCP. I think he is super.

Actually practicing out of San Pedro.
Very good credentials, very professional, and a kind heart.
Good staff. Although I got really pissed at my patient coordinator twice during the process, including when she forgot to get clearance from my insurance for the overnight hospital stay, which almost caused the surgery to be delayed. She was distracted with some personal issues at the time.
Great website, very helpful.
Provides a binder at the first appointment to explain the process so we all are in sync and are organized. EXTREMELY HELPFUL STEP!
Has support groups, although the first session I attended was rather off-putting. It's gotten much better (although I also attend a second group through Torrance Memorial Medical Center).
I went through a lot of effort screening doctors... [Click here for more] and I am very pleased with Dr. Owens on all levels.
Surgical competence is ultimately most important but I also have a punch list which included manners and communications; I feel it is important to screen first for competence but don't settle for less than you need in other areas as well.

I met my surgeon on a Thursday and my surgery in Tijuana the following Monday. His staff was so helpful and were there for me when ever I needed them. I have had to be unfilled twice due to my band becoming to tight. This last time I had to call my surgeon on a Saturday. I felt so bad. But he met me at his office in 30 minutes and took care of me. I can't say enough nice things about Dr. Owens and his team! Posted on 10/09/2008 |

I met Dr. Owens back in April. He appears to be a very caring person. His office staff are very helpful and very kind. The only thing I did not like about Dr. Owens is that his office is so far away from my home. I went out to see him on a Thursday and what should have been an 1 1/2 hour drive turned out to be over 3 hours. I called to let them know the traffic was horrible and Dr. Owens and the wonderful staff waited for me. They did not rush me at all. Dr. Owens seems to have a complete before and after care program. I like the fact that I can reach him 24 hours a day if I have any type of problem. I can't say if my feeling for him have changed as I don't have my surgery until 8/1/08. But I will keep you posted. Last question what is more important surgical competence... [Click here for more] or bedside manner. For me it is surgical competence as long as he does a suburb job on me, he can be as big of a jerk as he wants (and so far He has been a marvoulous man to work with.

The lap band surgery and the support from Dr. Owens are why I feel that my life has changed for the better. I can honestly say that I have a second chance of life to enjoy my new me and my 2 ½ year old daughter. I have lost 160 pounds in the last 16 months and have gained so much more health, happiness, and life.
Dr. Owens has done more than I could imagine in being supportive and very approachable and accommodating during my weight loss journey!
I would rate Dr. Owens above 10/10! Posted on 05/02/2008 |

I just love this guy! :)) He's got a very quiet, understated sense of humor and I felt instantly comfortable with him. His office staff is extremely helpful (thank you Suzanne!) and are very good about returning phone calls and answering any questions I may have. They are very well-informed about how to deal with insurance companies, and I had my approval 10 days after my initial consultation. They have a comprehensive program they have created for WLS and I feel very comfortable and well-informed going into this. Overall, I'd recommend him to anyone looking for the surgical expertise and bedside manner all rolled into one! :)) Posted on 03/26/2008 |

In my personal experience, Dr. Owens is an excellent, experienced Surgeon. The first time I met him he said "you're going to wish you did this years ago". He was right! He didn't rush me and answered all of my questions, carefully explaining the risks. He & his staff made the process easy & smooth for me. What I liked most was his passion for his work and that he clearly enjoys being instrumental in changing his patients lives for the better. I found him to be caring & thoughtful with a sense of humor too. But...for me, the person that I want re-arranging my internal workings must be, first & foremost, highly skilled at what he/she does with a scalpel. I have had no problems. The surgery and recovery was easier than I could have ever imagined! I stopped my pain meds by the 2nd night... [Click here for more] in the hospital. I really haven't had any pain since being home. I was released on the 2nd day post- op and was happy to sleep in my bed as normal and able to take care of myself in every way (i.e.- bathroom issues, shower etc). This was major because, at my size, that isn't always easy WITHOUT just having had surgery. My personal impression of Dr. Owens is that of a dedicated, talented, innovative surgeon. Aftercare is a bit lacking. There isn't an R.D. on staff or for referral, the Dr. is your nutritionist. The office staff could be more helpful with post -surgery questions. They usually refer to the Dr. who is difficult to reach at times, as he is a busy surgeon.

After reading Dr. Owens' profile and meeting him in person, I felt very confident having him perform my surgery. His office staff (Gaby, specifically) was very competent and kind in helping me navigate the insurance hoops. The notebook they have put together for pre- and post-op education was extremely helpful and complete. I entered my surgical experience with no unanswered questions and my expectations have been abundantly exceeded. I'll take sugical competence over bedside manner any day, but Dr. Owens satisfied my needs in both ways. Posted on 01/12/2008 |
