*What was your first impression of him?
During the seminar my husband & I went to Dr Hornbostel covered just about ALL the ins & outs of the gastric bypass surgery. They explained the details of the entire process & explained the life changes it involves. At the end of the seminar, we even got to talk to the members of the support group that has already had the surgery to find out what positive & negative things they have experienced during & after their surgery. Dr. Hornbostel makes sure to schedule the seminars right before the support group meetings just for that reason. So, my first impression of him was that he was quite straight forward & very knowledgeable about all of the info he covered during the seminar. Not only was he thorough, but, even though there was about 30... [Click here for more] - 40 of us at the seminar, he was also very amiable to us all & compassionate to all of our individual needs.
*How did your impression change over time?
My impression has really not changed over time except to maybe feel even happier with my decision to choose him as my Dr.
*How would you describe his office staff?
I would describe his office staff as being just as informative, helpful, & friendly as he is. I’ve spoke mostly with his wife & assistant, Margie, whom has (on more than one occasion) gone out of her way to help me.
*What did you like least about him?
What I like least about him, I guess, would be the fact that his office is so far away from were we live (about 115 miles away).
*What should future patients know about him?
Not sure what to say here except that if you are in the area & you have the chance to, look into what he has to offer.
*How much does he emphasize aftercare?
The programs he has for your preparation for the surgery, during the surgery, & after the surgery are incredible. Prior to the first consultation, you must fill out & send in a health history questionnaire that they give you. Then, you are required to provide insurance info, a letter of necessity from your PCP & documentation that you have attempted to loose weight in the past. Then, finally, have a psychological assessment. During my first consultation with him & Margie, we went over any health problems I have/had, any questions I’ve had about the procedure &/or the benefits & risks, and what to expect for the outcome. They also gave me a very informative “Patient & Family Education” binder that has all sorts of info & resources. The support team that he uses include: +Cardiologist +Nutritionist/Dietician +Anesthesiologist +Physical Therapy +Counseling & Psychological Consultation +Support groups, online help & forums, & outreach resources +As well as having a kind & very helpful nursing, lab & office staff who have always been glad to help in any way they can & to answer any questions I’ve had.
*Does he have a structured aftercare program?
Yes, there is a structured plan of aftercare & follow-up visits with the Dr himself & continual visits with physical therapy, dieticians, and the other members of his support team.
*How did he address the risks of surgery?
As I have already said, he is very straight forward & as such he clearly outlines all the risks & complications that may occur during AND post-surgery. In the binder I spoke of, there are several mentions of this & there is also a whole section dedicated to the subject.
*How would you rate him overall?
5 out of 5! ;)
*Which is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or are both great?
As far as I can tell now, both are great.

When I attended the Seminar in August I really did not know what to expect. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Every question was answered completely and courteously. you were never made to feel small for asking any question. Dr. Hornbostel has a wonderful demeanor and wonderful at making you feel at ease. His assistant is also very pleasant and knowledgeable. She was very helpful as well.
When I went for my initial appointment, he gave a very thourough description as to what to expect. He did not "candy coat" anything either! He wanted to ensure that you were informed fully of the risks as well as the benifits.
I have my surgery scheduled for the 23rd of October and I can not wait to begin my new life!! I have actually already recommended Dr. Hornbostel... [Click here for more] to a friend of mine who is considering the surgery as well.
Thank you to Dr. Hornbostel and your staff- I am looking forward to becoming your next success!!

Dr. Hornbostel is great. He's very busy so you dont get to see him much, but the office staff is very helpful and friendly and so is everyone at Bothwell Regional Health Center. They answer all of my questions, make sure I understood all of my pre-op instructions and helped my family find a hotel to stay in whaile I have surgery and health food stores for my vitamins. They have a nutritions who will go step by step over pre and post op diet. All surgery risks are expalined. On a scale of 1-10 Dr. H gets a 100!!! Posted on 08/28/2008 |

I was totally at ease with my doctor. I went to his seminar and he was very informative and to the point. He listened to each question and made you feel like you were theonly person he was dealing with, very respectfull. I reallydid not have a change of him, I still feel he is great! The staff at his office is run byhis wife Margie and she is awesome too. They both try as hard as they can to get one the surgery they need. I would say the thing I liked least was I wanted to spend more time and caht with him however I do know how hard it is to run a clinic. To all future patients of RNY surgery this DOctor is the best out there I think. I would recommend him over and over again. Doctor Hornbostel is very srtict with after care. You must follow his recommendations to have a... [Click here for more] successfull outcome without complications. Doctor Hornbostel does have a very structureed after care program. The risks of surgery are described to you at the seminar and are also in the white binder that you are given at your first appointment. I would rate Doctor Hornbostel a 8 on a scale of 1-10. I feel that surgical knowledge, bedside manner are all very important in the outcome of a persons surgery!

I attended a seminar on Barriatric Surgery that Dr Hornbostel conducted in July. He seemed very knowledgable and answered everyone's questions. But what I guess impressed me most was the way he made you feel comfortable. There were no "dumb" questions. He took his time. He was funny. And then this week (08/13/08) I had my first appointment with him and he was as down to earth as he was in the meeting. He went over items with me and welcomed questions. I beleive that I am in good hands. And the office staff. They are great. Margie is a dream!! Posted on 08/14/2008 |

My first contact with Dr. Phillip Hornbostel was during one of his “first Sunday” seminars in Sedalia, MO.
My wife and I drove about ninety miles from our home in Olathe, KS (suburban Kansas City) to Sedalia MO.
I am on disability and early retirement and have been on Medicare/Humana Choice PPO and was somewhat limited on doctors available in Kansas City that accepted my insurance.
Growing up and living in large cities all my life, I was sort of hesitant of going to a small town and small hospital for a medical procedure.
The meeting was at the Bothwell Regional Hospital, and I was impressed with the facility, and when Dr. Hornbostel started the seminar, I was totally impressed with his communication skills, confidence in his ability, and the informative presentation he gave,... [Click here for more] all done with no more than a dry board and projector without any computerized media special effects.
After the first office visit in May 2008 my appointment with him only confirmed my first impression.

My very first impression of Dr.H was that he was very stiff but very informative. But over time I began to see a different side to him as very caring. His staff is wonderful anytime you need them they try there best to help you. If I had to pick something I did not like is that at times he can just be to the point and not give you much office time and you feel rushed but he is a busy man. If you are considering Dr. H just look past his doctor facts and see a man that really dose care about his patient. This center really will stress the importants of aftercare and the vitamins and They make sure you know all the risks so that you can make an informed decision. I would rate this Doctor and His staff Highly . Posted on 07/30/2008 |

I have been working with Dr. Hornbostels office since February 2007. If it was strictly up to him and his office staff this surgery would be done a long time ago. My PCP was hesitant about surgery matters at times and was very slow in getting tests and procedures scheduled. She was also very delayed in getting the results into Dr. H's office in a timely manner. Dena went out of her way to help me in every way possible. Her and Margie are great. Dr. H is very informed, he is very knowledgeable and tells you everything in detail. He is great at answering your questions. I couldn't have asked for a better doctor. Anyone thinking about getting this surgery done should see him. There isn't anything I don't like about him or his staff. They are great! I have nothing negative to say about... [Click here for more] Dr. Hornbostel or his staff. On a scale of 1-5 they're a 10. I had the surgery on March 10th. In less than 4 months I lost 75 pounds. Thank you Dr. Hornbostel. Margie, and staff.
