I decided to go with Dr. Umbach after attending several seminars by other surgeons, because he seemed to be more personal and direct in his explanation of the pros and cons of each type of surgery. I didn't get the feeling he was trying to "sell" me something. He is easy to talk to, and has given me a great deal of personal care and attention after my surgery. His office is great and his wife Holly has also been very helpfull and supportive. I can't think of anything I like the least about him, but it was tough to get my initial appointment because their new office wasn't open yet. I feel that future patients should consider Dr. Umbach if more personal attention is important to them. He seems to be doing an excellent job in regards to aftercare so far. He stresses... My first impression of Dr. Umbach was that he was able to get to the point and was eager to get you on your way to an healthy lifestyle once again, not to mention that he most likely hears this all the time that he has the most beauitful blue eyes. It throughs you off abit. My impression of him did change after I got to know him more, he is very sincere and has no problem answering any questions or fears that you have. I definitly felt more connected with out feeling like I was just another patient. His office staff is always pleasant and happy to see you, and are very informative as well. I think that future patients need to about him that no question is a dumb question. He is there to answer all your concerns and fears and don't hold anything back. Dr. Umbach does... My recommendation for Dr. Umbach comes not from my first impression of him as he is very reserved initially which can be mistaken as disinterested, but rather the result of the on-going care I have received from him which reveals him to be a highly-educated and truly concerned healthcare provider. Every Doctor cares in one way or another about each patient they have; however, Dr. Umbach shows true compassion to all of his patients, even for issues that are not related to the weight loss surgery itself, because he is ultimately interested in the total well-being of each person. I am very sorry to see him leave our fine city of Eugene, but wish him luck wherever his path may lead him. I am excited for all of the patients that he will be seeing, because I know that they will be treated... [Click here for more]

Oregon Bariatric Center is Eugene, OR is a department of the hospital I work for. I first met with Neal Gorrin MD and was so comfortable with him and with Kathy Andrews, the nurse. Unfortunatly before I had surgery, both had left the Center. They both were a big part in my comfort the the OBC. Everything to do with the procedure, all preop and postop expectations was explained to me in depth and no question was considered stupid by them. I have a great handbook documenting everything about the surgery and a year later, I still refer to it from time to time. Dr Tom Umbach did my surgery and has done all my followup. I am thrilled that he is my surgeon. He is a kind and relaxed person to talk to and I never felt rushed in my time spent with him. Unfortunately, is... [Click here for more]

My first impression was he's very good looking! He was the most honest and forthright doctor I had met. He was the first to not sugar coat the surgery and risks which I, working in health care appreciated but he scared my daughter to death :) over time and now being so well with not a single complication I think he is by far the best in his field. His office staff has been under alot of change since the day of my surgery so unfortunally I don't use the office staff except for Karlyn, who is an excellent dietican. His aftercare is pretty typical and he does expect you to follow up. I would rate Dr. Umbach a 15 on a scale of 1-10!!! His surgical competence is beyond reproach and for a surgeon and everyone knows their reputations he is very warm and friendly and caring. He's my... [Click here for more]

Met him the day before surgery. I had no background knowledge of him. I am just a very trusting soul. Found Dr. Umbach to be sort of a quiet kind of guy, not very engaging in conversation. I liked that, because I got to ask all my questions and he answered every one. One GREAT thing I REALLY liked was he actually kept asking "Are you sure you want to do this?" "People die from this" and things like that. I know it was not meant to scare me...in so much as it was trying to make sure I had really thought this through. There is so much positive you can hear and see about surgery results... and not very often you hear about what the "downside" possibilities of the surgery are. So, again, I felt Dr. Umbach was making sure I knew this was not some simple outpatient surgery.... [Click here for more]

He seemed very forthcoming about the surgery and what his requirements were prior to surgery. I really like his staff, especially Kathy. He emphasized after care. The after care program, excluding follow up visits which are mandatory, seems fairly unstructured. It is available but not required. He was very thorough about risks and potential outcomes. I'd say his surgical competence is best. His bedside manner is really good, calm and supportive, but I find him difficult to approach.    Posted on 07/04/2007

OPEN EXPLORATORY DR. UMBACH & GORRIN EUGENE, OR EMERGENCY SURGERY TO CORRECT A BLOCKED INTESTINE- COVERED BY MED INSURANCE I want to add some info about Dr. Umbach. He was not the surgeon who performed my RNY. However, when I moved to Oregon I met Dr. Umbach in emergency sugery in January '07. I had a block in my intestines. He has continued to take care of my bariatric needs since that time. He has a great staff. He has pretty much adopted me as a bariatric patient and I feel lucky to be in his care. Dr. Umbach is part of the Oregon Bariatric Center located in Eugene, Oregon. Working with Dr. Umbach is also Dr. Gorrin. Very friendly doctor. *** OPEN RNY DR. Dr. Umbach seems to be a very caring doctor. I would say he's pretty laid back. his slip on shoes and no socks, give me that impression. He was very thorough about what to expect and not to expect after surgery. He covered the possible risks that sometimes follow the surgery, but assured me that if I had a problem he would be right there finding out what was wrong and fixing it. I haven't spent much time with him, but more with his staff and I love his staff. My nurse case manager Kathy is very upfront and honest. She's the one who knows the answers, or knows how to get the answers. The bariatric center has a dietician, a psychologist and a physical therapist all on staff. They're there before surgery and they're there after surgery. So far I am very pleased with the whole Bariatric... [Click here for more]
