Well, after reading and re-reading about 300 testamonials I can only hope that Dr. Alvarez is as wonderful as his reputation is...especially his surgical skills and expertise. My surgery is only 6 days away and I get butterflies every time I think of it...I know it is the right decision but as an O.R. nurse for 16 years now I pray no "intraoperative" incident occurs and if it does everyone is trained and prepared to handle it. Scared but excited... Posted on 11/07/2009 |

My first impression of Dr.Alvarez was that he looked very debonair. He dressed very professional and he is very sincere and my first impression of him never changed. Dr.Alvarez's office is very modern and he staff was nice. There was not anything that I disliked about Dr.A, his office, staff, etc. I really enjoyed my experience and wouldnt change anything about it if I could. Dr.A and his assistant Dr.Rosales did a great job informing me how to take care of myself. Not to mention that Susan (the patient coordinator) sends you tons of paperwork that you have at hand if necessary. The risks of the surgery are simply laid out. I would rate Dr. Alvarez on a 1-10 scale with 1 being the lowest as a 10. I would also rate Dr.Rosales as a 10. There surgical competence and beside manner are... [Click here for more] both great. When I told people that I was going to Mexico to have this surgery they were skeptical but I was never worried. From the moment I chose Dr.A I was confident in his abilities and I am so glad that I chose him to have my surgery. Dr.Alvarez is a great surgeon and I am so glad that I chose him to help me begin my journey with weightloss!

Dr. Alvarez is fantastic. I do not regret my decision to have weight loss surgery. My surgery was on Oct. 9th and I had no complications at all. I was hesitant at first to have this surgery done and then on top of that to have it done in Mexico. I did not know what to expect. I live across the border and when I saw that people from all over the world come to Piedras to have this procedure done with Dr. Alavrez, I realized that my fears were what were holding me back from making what has become the best decision I have made in my life. My first impression of Dr. Alvarez was that he truly cares for his patients and he gave my family and me all the information that we needed. His office staff and his coordinator Susan are the best. Very supportive and always positive and willing... [Click here for more] to help. My stay at the hospital was only for a little over 24 hours. The staff were very professional I have no complaints. My follow-up appointments with Dr. Alvarez have been very beneficial and he is so so supportive and positive. His aftercare program is very helpful. I feel so fotunate to have this tremendous doctor live just minutes away from me. Also, you can email him and he will respond to you within 30 minutes. My family is very satisfied with him and they are so happy and proud of me. I am not tempted to eat and I am not hungry. I finally got control of what always controlled me. I highly recommend Dr. Alvarez. Thank you in advance for reading my testimonial and considering Dr. Alvarez. Carla

Dr. Alvarez is an excellent surgeon. He has a good bedside manner. I had surgery with Dr. A on October 13, 2009 and on October 14, 2009, I was up walking the halls and I even felt like I was never operated on, except for a little soreness. I would recommend Dr. Alvarez to anyone who wants the VSG surgery. The hospital is great and they come check on you constantly. My friends and family wanted to check out surgeons who performed the VSG near my home, but after research I would vote Dr. A hands down. He was my first choice, and I made him my last choice, and proud that I did. I wish everyone out their luck in their procedures for weight loss and good luck for a new thinner life. Here's just a small testimonial of my thoughts concerning our major problem.
The addiction to food.
Food, cure or hazard?
Food is like a drug. The more u eat the more u open your food
receptors to endolge and intoxicate yourself of all the harmful waste
they deliver. You become a reservoir of hazardous waste. To the point
that you need that amount of fuel to function until one day u are hit
with diabitis then coronary artery disease, peripheral obstructions,
billions of extra fat cells, joint problems, back pain, slured vision,
no air in your lungs, numness in your extremeties, full body edema.
Just total lack of quality life. Food is not the enemy but we make it
our enemy, our poison, our weakness. To the point it controls your
every thought, every... [Click here for more] plan, and every outcome brings you back to the
dinner table. Our anxiety grows with food, our self steam fades with
food, our bodies ditiriate with food, our social life fades with food,
but in essance it is not food the culprit but our habits, our
portions, our poor choices that handicap us. Bad foods, irregular
eating patterns, binging, sugars, carbs in excess, all these factors
are the ones who put us here. Stress, wether it be from financial
matters, to emotional issues, work related, we turn to food. For
comfort, for immidiate gratification, not for health maintenance nor
for proper nutrition, we eat for flavor, for pleasure, and to
fulfill the emtyness not only of our large stomachs but of our lives!
Let's take control, if we cannot cut our portions up and make long
term consistent commitments to ourselves, then restrict your input
volume by reducing the amount u can tolerate by cutting out 80% of
your stomach and therefore have a forced portion control in order to
get your life back. Eliminate that ghrelyn hormone, those hunger pangs
and take control of your full potential. Unfortunately we live in a
bias society where looks are the main essence of success. This journey
is not to be accepted by others but rather to enhance and regain
quality of life. Take control and become healthy once again for
yourself, your family, and all of those who love you.
Thank you Dr. Alvarez for a remarkable surgery free of pain and full
of hope. You are God's hands to all of those who need you.

I did a great deal of research before choosing Dr. Alvarez as my VSG surgeon. I feel surgeon skill and experience, complication rate, infection rate, etc. is an important aspect in choosing any physician. I first e-mailed Dr. Alvarez with my medical history and some preliminary questions. To my surprise he answered within a couple of hours. Dr. Alvarez then asked Lydia, his coordinator, to follow-up. Lydia is amazing! She answered every question, e-mailed all forms and directions, telling me where we would stay, about accommodations for my husband, and what to expect from day one. Things went very smoothly and there were absolutely no surprises.
We loved Rosey, Dr. Alvarez’s cousin that picked us up at the airport and transported us to each destination. She treats Dr.... [Click here for more] Alvarez’s patients like they are her family. Rosey took extra time with my husband, taking him across the street from the hospital to show him where to go eat, explaining foods, etc. He really appreciated her efforts. He felt completely safe.
Dr. Alvarez was exactly what I expected; very professional, personable, and very patient with questions he has answered dozens of times. He spends as much time as needed to educate his patients on the VSG procedure and go over medical history, knowing his out of country patients can be apprehensive. Fast forward to that same afternoon: My surgery was between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Surgery went smoothly and that included removing my lap-band. I had no pain and refused pain medications within a few hours post-op. Dr. Alvarez checked on me several times throughout the evening, leaving the hospital at 11:30 p.m. and returning early the next morning. I have never seen such dedication to patients’ well-being. Dr. Rodriguez also came by just to say “hello.” Each of the two days we were there we were encouraged to walk, walk, walk. I am so glad I did as I had no gas pain. This was a real difference from my lap-band in August, 2006.
The second day post-op we were discharged with post-op instructions and a small Tupperware-type box with all meds, prescriptions for crossing the border, and records for claiming the VSG on taxes next year. There is also a paper to be given to my PCP explaining the VSG procedure. All bases really are covered, leaving nothing to chance for the patient. I know I can call Dr. Alverez or Lydia anytime with questions.
I would choose Dr. Alvarez and his team again without hesitation. They do not take an impersonal approach with their patients. They take each case as an individual that has trusted them to care for and help move toward a life altering surgery and healthful lifestyle. I will always be grateful to each member of the team, but especially to Dr. Alverez.

Dr. Alverez is very nice and puts you to ease when very first meeting him. Everyone in his office is very nice and helpful. I would rate him a 10 out of 10. His bedside manner and surgical competence are both great. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to have VSG surgery. Posted on 10/03/2009 |

First of - reading all the reviews and testimonials about Dr. Alvarez on here and his video channel really set the bar high for my expectations of him. Every single testimonial I read about him really gave you the idea that he is a phenomenal doctor and person. Meeting him, I was not disappointed in the slightest. He was so friendly right off the bat, and never once did I feel uncomfortable. I instantly trusted him to safely get me through surgery, and he did - with much success. His whole staff is incredible! If you decide to work with them, you'll meet his incredible coordinator Susan - I fell in love with her friendliness from our first conversation. I called and called with the tiniest questions and she was ALWAYS available to answer them - no matter how minuscule they seemed... [Click here for more] to me. The whole hospital staff was also so approachable; One of the nurses that stood out the most is Christie - even though it wasn't a problem for me, she spoke English very well and was able to calm my nerves right beforehand. Dr. Alvarez, Dr. Rosales, the entire nursing staff, and Susan, of course, instantly made me feel so at ease with such a major procedure.
Dr. A practicing his field in Mexico should be of no concern - he knows what he is doing! I lost 21lbs on my pre-op diet and 65 lbs post-op, which will be 3 months as of October 6. Totaling a loss of 86lbs in 4 months. I'd say I'm pretty happy with my results, and it'll only get better from here!
I researched high and low for a good surgeon that I'd feel confident about. Through the entire process, I never once doubted that Dr. A and his staff genuinely cared about their patients. Choosing to go through with the procedure and choosing this surgeon in particular go hand in hand with one of the best decisions I've made thus far.
