I have to say that I LOVE Dr. Sudan. He is patient and kind and seems to genuinely care about his patients. He is extremely experienced and knowledgable and answers all of my questions, even the random dumb ones. :+)
The staff at Duke's WLS Center, however, are not so stellar. His admin person is Cathy. She's not so great at returning calls and she's pretty set in her ways. Via my persistence, I did manage to twist her arm into accommodating some of my needs due to traveling from several hours away. If you're having the DS, ask to see the nutritionist name Patrick. If you're having the DS as for Dr. Friedman for your psych eval. DO NOT see Dr. Applegate.
The hospital staff at Durham-Regional were very good. They were attentive and helpful and caring.
My only qualms... [Click here for more] with Dr. Sudan are that he doesn't routinely do labs at 3 months (though he did them for me when I requested it) and his stomach/sleeve size is a little on the large side at 5 ounces. Though, I've passed 50% EWL in 3.5 months, so it's working!

My first impression of Dr. Sudan was that he was a bit aloof and very busy, but also very competent. He answered all my questions very adequately. After my surgery my bowels ended up paralyzed for a week (not his fault, somewhat common complication for many types of surgeries) and it became apparent throughout my extended stay at the hospital that he genuinely cared about me and my progress. I think in the end what I first took for aloofness might have been a bit of shyness.
The staff at the Metabolic Center is an entirely different story, however. Please do not assume, as I did, that being a Duke establishment automatically means quality service; not so. I have never met a bunch of incompetent, lazy, useless people in my life. If you choose to use Dr. Sudan for your surgery,... [Click here for more] be prepared to 1) never have your phone calls returned, 2) be double-billed 3) have scheduled appointments completely FUBAR'd by the staff 4) discover that no 2 people in that office have any idea what anyone else is doing; ie. telling me I can have my pre-ops on the same day, another telling me I can't, etc. 5) and if you're having a duodenal switch, be prepared for the front desk to tell you they don't do them.. even though I'm living proof they do. You must, MUST be your own best advocate when dealing with them, or you will get nowhere, and you MUST keep detailed track of who you talked to at what time at what date. The whole process for me (and others I've spoken with) was an incredibly frustrating and angering one.
That said! The hospital that Dr. Sudan uses, Durham Regional, is top notch. There were some SNAFUs, but for the most part the nurses and aides were incredibly nice and attentive, and graceful in the face of some really gross issues I had. They have a bariatric wing with beds that adjust pressure points so you aren't resting on one spot too long, the rooms are private (though they range in size from small to pretty darned big; I had a big one).
All in all, I would recommend Dr. Sudan wholeheartedly, so long as you're prepared to slog through the process to actually meet him and have your surgery. He's a great doctor, the hospital was awesome, and the sucky office staff can be dealt with via some gritted teeth and cursing about them to your family members.
And as the page I'm filling this out on says to do, this is all just my personal impression based on my own experiences.

my first impression of dr. sudan was how much he talked and his interest in help the obese people he was short and to the point he was the one with the most experience and his nurse was a caring person in the support classes. the staff in the office seem to be very busy and they ask lots of ???he did'nt spend enough time with me i though i felt rushed and he really emphasized aftercare and so did his staff. to my knowledge he does have a aftercare program and it continues on for a year after surgery he did cover all the risk and the best surgery for me. he did tell me that the lapr. instead of the open RNY is what he recommended and i feel he has a good reputation and his staff seem to be great the support group has won me over and the people i met. his surgical competence is great... [Click here for more] i have yet to see his bedside manner.over all i feel he is the one i would like to do my surgery and all of my aftercare procedures. Dr Sudan is leaving omaha as of the first week in August and he will not be coming back he"s moving to North Carolina and a Dr. Frese is taking his place along with another Dr who thy are looking to hire.

He is a wonderful surgeon. A kind and caring man as interested in aftercare as the surgery. Posted on 07/03/2008 |

I met him on Sept 5, 2007 and really like him. He is thorough and friendly. Really knows his stuff and is knowledgable in all WLS. A big PLUS for me! rnrnDr. Sudan was wonderful while I was being prepped for surgery. He asked where my hubby was going to stay and we had problems finding a motel because world college baseball games were in town and DH was just going to sleep in the chair in my room. When we got to my room the nurse brought in a fold out chair that turned into a bed for him. Dr. Sudan had told them to get him one. Thanks so much Dr. Suday for EVERYTHING! Posted on 06/22/2008 |

My first meeting with Dr. Sudan and his nutritionist was a tearful one, but I had the support of my husband and one of our daughters to help me through. Dr. Suden is very pleasant to talk, he is gentle in a special way, but blunt and too the point at the same time. The office staff was very polite and receptive to our questions. Everything was "laid out on the line" from the first meeting. Posted on 05/25/2008 |

I very first impression of him was that he is a very smart person, and he reflects that by his answers to all questions. He explained all the risks of surgery and was very caring. I would rate him excellent on everything1 Posted on 03/31/2008 |

Dr. Sudan is very professional. He is imformative and perfectionistic about his patient's care. He provides the best in pre-op and post-op care. He is always pleasant, concerned, and available for questions. He is knowledgeable on both physical and psychological aspects of bariatric surgery. The staff associated with Dr. Sudan are organized, also professionally trained and work well as a team. This program met my needs but is not a warm and cozy environment. Their focus is very professional and to give excellent care. If one wants warm fuzzies, take mom with you. Posted on 02/07/2008 |
