Question:
I am switching insurance, how soon is too soon

to ask them to cover WLS. I had Preferred Health Network insurance and they denied me because WLS is an exclusion. Rather than fighting with them, it's easier for me to just switch insurance companies to a company I know will approve me. I don't have many co-morbities, but at 455# 6', I'm sure i'll have no problems getting approved. My question is, how long after I switch to the new company should I wait to submit a letter asking them to cover me?    — Monica H. (posted on September 24, 2001)

I switched insurance companies on July 1, 2001. I had already booked my initial consult with my surgeon (for October 30th)and started calling and asking questions on July 5th, only five days after the effective date. As soon as you have the insurance you can ask how to obtain approval! I did! I was very hesitant at first, as you probably are, but YOU pay for the insurance and YOU pay for the doctors so YOU run not walk to your PCP! Since there probably wasn't a gap in your coverage you should be just fine.

You can use your benefits as soon as they become effective. However, make sure you check your policy for "pre-existing" clauses. This can be the thing that gets you. If there are none, then continue on as soon as your ready.
