Question:
Does anyone know how much you have to pay out of pocket for Kaiser of CA (Bay Area)?

I have a friend who would like to know how much the cost of surgery is with Kaiser of California/Bay Area. Also, for those of you who got Kaiser to pay, was it difficult? Did you have to appeal? What should my friend do to get the ball rolling to try and get Kaiser to approve her WLS? What percentage does Kaiser usually pay for WLS? If you want, you can email my friend, Fran, directly at [email protected]. Thanks for the info.!    — Jennifer Y. (posted on February 24, 2002)

I have Kaiser in San Diego ( I understand there is some difference between the regions) - the first thing your friend needs to do is find a PCP that supports WLS- she will need a MD to recommend her- with Kaiser you have to have a BMI of +50 if you have no comobidities- If you have co morb- (diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, back prb, knee etc, you may get approved with a lower BMI- Just make an appointment and talk to your provider- You could also check with your membership service dept to determine your coverage but I think for most it's 100% ( mine it)

I am not in the Bay area, but in Southern California. I am pre op at this point, but according to the mandatory meeting I was required to attend, if I am approved, Kaiser covers the cost 100%. The previous response gave you completely accurate information concerning Kaiser. Good luck to your friend!
