Question:
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION!!

For thousands of people, getting insurance approval for Weight Loss Surgery is a drawn-out, agonizing process that can end with a concrete denial. It is time that morbidly obese people not have to worry about fighting insurance companies for a surgery that is approved by the National Institutes of Health as a life saving operation. There are alot of issues that need to be worked out pertaining to the details but this is a start. I will be consulting with Congressmen on the legalities! With this in mind, I have started a petition that will be sent to all members of Congress and to President Bush to require insurance companies to cover this surgery, no questions asked. Please click on the below link and fill out the simple form. Every person counts! http://shawnag1976.tripod.com/shawnasweightlosssurgeryjournal/id13.html Thank you and good luck to you in your WLS journey!    — SMG I. (posted on November 19, 2002)

I am surprised that there is less than 200 signatures on the petition. Where is everyone. We have so many members here.

Fay, I don't know if that includes the private entries on the guestbook (mine is private). <p> Shawna - I have posted your previous entry on the Q&A on the UPENN-WLS yahoogroups list that I belong to. Several people on that list said that they were going to notify other lists/groups that they belong to...JR

I signed it! I also have a support group meeting tonight and made little slips with the info on it, I'll have them bring them to other support group meetings also. Other than the required info needed, my process was realatively smooth (long at the time thought), so I was blessed! Thank you for starting this, it's about time we ban together for everyone health!

Does this also include people who are 18 and younger? I'll totally sign it, but does it include the are clause?

after signing the petition & entering a long commentary (sorry) emailed the link to wls patients AND to the people in my personal life who supported & continued to support my decision. i explained what the petition is about & asked only that they read it & the comments of the signers & then decide if they will sign or not. this is not just an issue for wls patients, but, an issue for all people who r affected by having a morbidly obese person in their personal lives. how r these people affected u might ask. they r afraid we will die of our disease, they feel helpless & hopeless knowing they can do NOTHING for us other than support us, we cant join our families in most activities, etc. these r just a few reasons why i sent the petition to the people who love & care about me. wont u all do the same? we NEED this petition to become a legislation bill. god bless us all.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT. MY WEBSITE HAS ONLY BEEN UP FOR LESS THAN 48 HOURS AND I THINK 350 SIGNATURES IS PRETTY DARN GOOD. I THINK INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE UNDERESTIMATING WHAT WE CAN DO IF WE ALL GROUP TOGETHER AND FIGHT THIS!!! THANK YOU ALL AGAIN!

GREAT JOB SHAWNA!!!! Your website is EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL looking and your initiative is to be commended! Thank you for thinking of others! WLS SAVES LIVES! Just one suggestion-can you highlight the link on this site so that people can just click on it? It is a long URL and I would hate for people not to sign the petition just because it's not just a click away. KUDOS TO YOU!!

Rebecca - we are not allowed to use hyperlinks in the Q&A. If we do, the question/reply will be deleted by the moderators...JR

I signed it yestersay, but I just wanted to say that if you highlight the addy and copy it and then paste it into the address bar of your browser it is easier than trying to type the whole thing.

First off, I want to say thank you Shawna! Second of all, people please make sure you put both your first and last names. A first name only, or an initial and a name won't cut it as far as a valid signature. Treat it just like you would if you were putting pen to paper for a tangible petition. Thanks again Shawna!!!!!! -Autumn
