Hi, I had the VBG 9/10/02. Feel free to email me and ask anything you wish. I am considered a "lightweight", but have still lost 40lbs! I chose the VBG for a number of reasons. I am more than happy to share them with you. Take care and best wishes in whatever decision you make! Helen

I was going to have VBG, but my doctor informed me that it doesn't cure reflux, so just FYI in case you have it.

I havd Silastic Ring Vertical Banded Gastroplasty 6-8-98 and lost 100 lbs. I have since gained back 75 lbs. I am scheduled to have RNY revision on 12-03-02. Had I researched more back then and had the great support and resources that are here on thi ssite, I would NOT have had the VBG, I would have had the RNY in thefirst place. I have a problem with sweets and fats, that's why RNY is the better choice for me. I gotta give you credit for doing your homework ahead of time!

I had the VBG in 11-93 and originally lost 65-70 lbs. but have regained all plus 15 more. I am scheduled for RNY on 12-30. Also developed GERD and hiatal hernia. I now have 2 openings into my stomach from staple breakdown. Like the person before I did no research and was a big sweet eater. This surgery is a reduction surgery only. Also I did not have good aftercare and there were no support groups. I DO wish you the best of luck and hope things go well for you esp. since you are doing research. It may be for you, it just wasn't for me.

Hello Kim! I had a VBG in april of 2001. I had a weightloss of about 100 pounds. At 18 months I noticed that I wasn't getting that "full" feeling that I had before. After an upper G.I. a staple line tear was discovered. I have re-gained about 25 pounds and am having to make a decision about a revision. My roommate from the hospital also needs a revision, due to a tear and a torn ring. From what I have read, VBG is a tool and works well for SOME people. It did get me off to a good start. Good luck and research well!!!!

I had this surgery April 10, 2002. So far I have lost 120 pounds. I have not had any major issues. I know this is not a popular surgery on this site because of the failure rate. In my opinion you can fail with either surgery. You do have work to attain your goal.

Our surgeon says 80% of VBGs fail. I encourage you to check out the Lap Band if your serious about the VBG,. The Lap Band is basically a high tech ADJUSTABLE VBG. I choose the RNY and love it. Its good we have choices...

I had the VBG it failed me and I re-gained, but have been revised to RNY. You know, when this question comes up (as it does periodically) I ALWAYS let it be known that this is my experience only, and I am not trying to persuade someone away from a type of surgery they feel is best for them.

I don't appreciate Carol's response because she makes it sound like those of us that had the VBG and had weight regain are somehow "abusing" our "tools", or that we did not work hard enough to reach our goals. I got to goal, I was there for several years when the surgery failed me. Not the other way around.

It looks like those that posted in support of the VBG are pretty recent post-ops, within the last year or so. I would NEVER, EVER wish for them to go thru what I did. I think that losing the weight and re-gaining it was harder on me mentally than if I had remained obese all that time. I was about 5 years post-op when the weight started creeping back on. I did EVERYTHING I could to stop it and lose again, but my "tool" was broke. It took about 2 years to gain back, but by that time I knew I could have a revision. I had the RNY back in July 02, so far my loss has been slow, but steady - 50 pounds in 5 months.

I wish the information that is available now was available back then so that I could have done my research. It wasn't. The doctor I used did the VBG, so that's what I got. It's good that this site is available, that the info you need to make an informed decision is out there, and it's good that you are taking advantage of it. If you were to ask for my opinion, I would say that barring any physical reason like Teresa, go for the RNY and save yourself the chance that you will need a second surgery.

Yes, and it failed me. I echo all of Allison's comments. My three profiles tell the story.
