Question:
Vocational Rehabilitation???

Hi I have a friend who was on disability because of a stroke and other previous health problems. She started college trying to get her life together and they took her check. Vocational Rehab was helping with the college thing well when they took her check she tried to get a couple jobs and basically couldn't because of her weight and disability. Sounds to me like discrimination but not easily proved. We have discussed surgery and she really wants it but since she lost her Disability they took her medical card and medicare from her. I have heard Voc Rehab has helped people and asked her to talk to them but she is afraid because when they took her Check She got a letter from Voc Rehan that said since she didn't get disability any more they couldn't help her as much as they where sounds crazy but it is true. Anyone out there use Voc Rehab and if so can you tell me what she needs to be prepared for, and what to say to them? She is about 315 and LOTS of comorbs. Please help, Thanks Shell    — Shell G (posted on March 20, 2005)

I dont know where you are, but I am in Tx. My husband has been working for 2 years to get approved through Texas Rehab Commission. He finally has gotten approved 2 weeks ago, but it still waiting, the paperwork had to be sent back to austin and through the cycles. I dont know about anyone else, but my husband had the tests ran through the county hospital, because he had a good dr that thought WLS would work for him. He had everything done even before they asked. I know that they do help people, but it is a LONG HARD process. She just has to be ready for the waiting. (By the way...not to say he is more needing than she is, because I think everyone who needs this surgery should be able to get it...but he weighed 647 when we started this process...he is down to about 595 now. And it has still taken this long!)
