I had to do a total of 7 classes which were a mixture of nutrition, psychologist, surgeon going over procedure, pre-op and post-op care and pre-admission (what to expect). They had 1 each week I had to attend. Very informative. I was glad my surgeon had that requirement. But all surgeons are not the same. Donna

My insurance company requires that I take a nutrition course lasting 6 months. Thru Facey, I attend meetings twice a month which includes information about the different surgical procedures, what to expect after, including your eating habits, exercise, etc. Last meeting we met 2 people, one who had gb and the other who had lapband procedures and we were able to have a q&a session.

It depends if your self-pay or going through insurance. Most insurance companies require nutrition classes as well as being on a medically supervised diet. You are doing more than I was required to do but I was self-pay. I had a one hour class to go through expectation of after surgery and life after surgery. We were not given the book ahead of time to prepare for questions but we were told that we could call anytime with questions. I would have gone to other classes available had I been given that option. Someone may have thought of a question I hadn't thought of asking. Best wishes for you on your journey.

I was given a choice to attend a class once a week for 6 weeks or one 4 hour seminar. I choose the 4 hour class due to work schedule. We were given a whole binder full of pre and post op information, recipe suggestions etc. The class was very informative, we were even given samples of protien supllements and sugar freee cookies to try. They also sent us home with samples of bariatric vitamins! It was very informative.

I have to say that I am very impressed with Kaiser Permanente. They have a fairly strict regime to follow in order to qualify for the surgery. Honestly, the more informed you are, the better the decision you can make for yourself. If your doctor doesn't offer many classes, check into different hospitals, many offer free classes to those who are not members.
