Question:
Cost of wls done by Dr. Gail Wynn

I am an unemployed mother of two with virtually no savings. I have BCBS of DE from my husbands job. I wanted to know the amount of out of pocket cost that may occur. I am waiting for my referral for my first consultation and want to know before I commit.    — cubanquet (posted on March 27, 2006)

the average cost of a RNY is 50k, it depends on your deductable, and will they cover the operation. You need to contact your insurance carrier. you will most likely have to pay for the shrink and dietican which could run 700 plus dollars. You will also have to a large number of office visits after surgery and you will need to cover that also. good luck

La Quicia - #1 - I wanted to tell you great choice on your selection of docs! Dr. Wynn is awesome and the staff at CHIRAS is one of the best I have ever worked with. #2 - I would check with Blue Cross to see what your deductibles would be and to make sure they cover everything. If you have copays for doc visits, expect a copay for Dr. Wynn along with any other doc you may need to see (i.e. pulmonologist, heart doc, gi doc., etc.) When you get in for your initial consultation you will get a packet of info. from them telling them what kind of docs you need to see and what else needs to be done from that perspective.) Also - you will need to enroll in the Weight Management Program at PMRI (preventive medicine and rehab. institute) thru Christiana Hosp. They are located off of Rt. 52 just south of the Rt. 141 ramps. They have a program fee of $1200 (as of 2/05) which must be paid in full when you register. It is a 6 wk course which helps you learn to adapt to life after the WLS. You will also receive a psychiatric evaluation from them to make sure you are mentally ready. And beleive me - it is a serious life change. Also you will have post op visists with a doc or rn on staff and one of the nutrionists. All of these visists are included in the fee. There is also a bypass support group on the first monday and third saturday of the month. There is a $5 charge to attend - I would suggest attending before, especially if CHIRAS is offering info. on the bypass. There is also a support group through St. Francis in Wilm., but I don't know much about them. Also - once enrolled in the class it is suggested you try and lose some weight during the class. If you gain weight, they will force you to back up the surgery date until you take the weight back off. They have you weigh in before the start of each class. By the way - Drs. Peters and Irgau did my surgery last May (Dr. Wynn was out on maternity leave.) They are also real awesome. I am down 140 lbs. since I started my whole project. I lost @30 lbs. in class and 110 since the surgery. If you have any questions or just want someone to lean on, please email me. Would love to help you - can email me at [email protected]. Take care, don't be too nervous, read as much as you can, and ask questions. Take care and good luck! Jen By the way - I am ten months and
