Which is better Lap-Band or Gastric Bypass RNY?

I would say the by pass but that is because I had that and it worked really well for me. The lap band has slower results and you always have that foreign body inside you..but it is best to discuss it with your surgeon

Lap band has the worst record for losing weight and other problems. If you go under lap band revisions under surgical forms, people had problems with the fills, losing weight very, very slowly. It's one of the ones that gets the most corrections for other types of surgeries. Don't get me wrong. There are some people that have done well with it, but most don't. I had the rny and did exceptionally well it.

You need to discuss it with your surgeon but I'll give you insights. I was originally supposed to have the lap band but I struggled to lose the 10% of my body weight before surgery and considering how much weight I needed to lose, my surgeon strongly recommended the bypass and thats what I went with. People who have bypass surgery typically lose 60-80% of their excess body weight while people who have the lap band only lose 45% tops. It really depends on how much weight you need to lose. I needed to lose 166lbs so 45% really wouldn't have gotten me where I needed to be in terms of a healthy bmi. I am 2.5 months out and have lost 66lbs which I wouldn't have seen with the lap band. Also the lap band was encouraged because it was supposed to be safer than the bypass, however, statistics have shown that 40% of people who get the lap band convert to the bypass, which is a riskier surgery than the bypass alone. These are just a few things you need to consider in comparing the two.

ON Sept. 23 2009 I had the lapband procedure. Since that time I have only lost 12 pounds!!! I am now working toward the RNY surgery, and hopefully it will be this year.If you are patient and want to lose slowly, you choose the lapband. If not, or you want quicker results, the RNY might be the way to go, but always.... Talk to your doctor..

Hi there , I had the lap band surgery in 2007 and had no success only damage to my stomach. In the end I had a revision. Lap band to VSG. I'm so happy now with the outcome. It's been almost 8 months and I've list almost 90 lbs. I had a great surgeon. Dr Cirangle in San francisco. I wish I had never done the lap band. My life was horrible. It literally rulled my life with pain. And the regret was just as great. I go to wls meetings and all I hear are war stories like mine. Do your research. I thought it was cool cause it is a reversible surgery, yes but with great complications. I'm so happy I have had the vsg procedure. Take care and good luck

It also depends on your heath now what other kind of probulms in heath do you have like me i had type 2 dieabtes sleep apnea hbp my heath was on the down hill side before surgery now it is way better now i move better. so to say which one is better ? it all depends on other factors for me the bypass was the only way to go and i'm glad i did it

Have you considered vertical sleeve? I would have had that one if I hadn't been diabetic.

That is really a question that you need to answer for yourself. Do you research, talk to your Dr and then decide what you think is best for you. I had RNY and I am thrilled with the results. I have several friends that had the Band and they are pleased. Alot depends on how much you need to loose, how fast do you want to loose it, do you want some thing that is permanent, how do you feel about the long term issues that come with both etc... These are quetions that only you can answer. I decided that I was willing to deal with the mal-absorbtion issues involved with the RNY and I wanted a perm solution. That is up to you.

The Duodenal Switch has the best stats,if your diabetic,it resolves, you can eat normal, and its not a diet, like the other two surgeries, you asked about.I now weigh 119,happy and my best friend who got the rny is now starting to gain,a little weight,(14lb)and she is only 16 months out. Before u choose research all your options, there are more options than the two u asked about.Good luck with what ever you choose, remember one thing u have to live with your choice not a DR.or anyone else !!!! Choose a Dr. who can do all the surgeries,it takes a intellagent DR.to do DS.or sleeve, and u will have a better quality of life.Think twice, research. Best of luck.

From my experience with both lap-band and rny...I suffered with the lap-band for over two years, not being able to eat meat, lettuce, etc., had really bad acid reflux that caused night coughing, lots of throwing up, pain in the esophagal area and finally had to have it removed by emergency surgery when my stomach had a prolapse (ballooning above the lap-band due to food not being able to go down). They removed it and told me to wait to have it redone when my stomach had time to heal. I regained the 75 lbs. I'd lost plus more while waiting. During that time I decided to go with the rny. That was in May 2008. I lost 110 lbs. which I've been able to maintain with absolutely no problems, no pain. My advice is to bite the bullet and get the rny the first time. Good luck to you!

Hello, I agree with Lizafig I too had a very bad expereience and felt I was loosing my mind. (what they promissed didnt happen, I had so much pain and felt like a failure) I had three recissions a year to the date (2008) so finally in 2011 after the band was removed I asked to be referred for gastric bypass, I wish I would have gone that route to begin with but all I can do it look forward and I am so excited about my journey.
