Hi! Most insurances that cover barriatric surgery require a bmi of 40, OR a bmi of 35 with comorbidities. Check with your insurace and your doctor. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes or other health issues you should be covered! Good luck to you,,, I had RnY in December 06, my BMI was 45. I was 246 the day of surgery, I am 175 now... I have at least 30lbs more to go!

I'm 4'9 and weighed 202 lbs, for a BMI of 43.7. I had surgery on February 5 th and I've consistently lost one pound per week, at a very gradual pace. Today I am 25 lbs lighter, at 177 and my BMI is 38.3. I had the lap band done and I've got no regrets or complaints.

My bmi also was 39 and I had the lapband I am 5 9 to 5 10 and weighed 276 I am now down to 214 and I had my surgery on March 15 of this year.If you want insurance to cover you need some medical problems, all I had was my feet, they really hurt and I had six feet surgeries .After my lapband they found out that I had osteoarthritis in my feet.I dont know what surgery you are asking about,I was to scared to go the gastric way.Sandy Hanson

If our BMI is 35-39, weight loss surgery is only recommended if you have co-morbidities. Co-morbidities can be a variety of things, such as, diabetes, high blood pressure, joint pain, etc. It's very likely you have at least one of these and will be a candidate for surgery. if your BMI is 40 or higher, there is no requirement for co-morbities. I am 5'4" and weighed 240 the day of surgery. My BMI was 42. I had the lapband surgery in January 2003. I now have a BMI of 22 with a weight of 127.

Do you stretch to be taller when getting heighth measured? most do that but dont do that when qualifying for WLS. That one inch difference will push you to a 40 BMI or more. Run your height one inch shorter and you will see what I mean. Its not cheating cheating is really stretching, and nearly everyone does that. Of course if you have a bunch of health troubles it probably doesnt matter.......

I am 5'4" and 224 with a BMI of around 37. I have high blood pressure so I qualify. I am hoping to have RNY in the next month or so. Do you have any comorbidities? Most (I won't say all) doctors will qualify you if your BMI is 35 or over with one or more other health related problems, ie, comorbidities. Insurances are very different. Some will qualify people at a light weight range, while others will fight against covering a person who is very much larger. Strange but true, so check with your Dr and Insurance company to be sure.

I'm exactly the same height and weight as you. I'm having the Vertical Sleeve surgery on July 30th. I am self pay so having co-morbidities did not factor in, but I do have them.

I had bypass in may 2004 and my BMI was 39. I was denied the first time I requested, but then my company changed insurance providers and i was approved. I went from a size 20 to my current size 6. It has been the best thing to ever happen to me.....keep trying!!!
