Question:
Can your stomach tear or rupture after lap rny?

Is this possible? I was told you can rupture your stomach if the staples come out which is life threatening.    — angel4 (posted on March 18, 2007)

Hi Constance, many a person has wondered about this question. I know I did. Here is what I have learned along the way (I am 3 years post). When they used to use staples to divide the stomach, but not sever the stomach, the staples coming out were definitely an issue. It caused more problems that successes. I don't know of anyone now who does NOT sever the stomach. That is what I had done, they staple both the upper and lower stomach areas and sever the stomach into two pieces. When they do this, the stomach heals in both areas and seals. This is WHEN IT HEALS UP. It takes time to do that. Now, I have heard of ruptured stomach pouches after surgery, but it was ALWAYS associated with being stupid and eating huge amounts of food for greed and not stopping. One man ruptured his stomach by eating way too much KFC and would not stop. He got what he asked for, a ruptured stomach. Protect your pouch, and it will work for you for a very very long time. Abuse it and you can ruin your chances of weight loss and be sorry you ever thought about surgry. The choice is yours. Hope this helps. Take care, Patricia P

Three weeks after my surgery I tried some mash pot (i was told I could have this by my doctor) and it made me throw up. After I threw up my stomach hurt really bad for hours. My doctor had me to rush to the emergency room because I could have pulled my staples out of my stomach. Luckly I didnt. You can rupture your stomach by eating wrong kind of foods, throwing up or drinking carbonated drinks.

It is possible for a stomach to rupture and it can be life threatening. But this is something that can happen to anyone...regardless of whether or not they've had weight loss surgery. Fried chicken is irrelevant.

Constance, If you follow your surgeons post op regime, you should have no problems with this. I am a nurse and have never seen a rupture in my years of nursing.
