Question:
I am between 90 and 100 lbs. overweight. What kind of surgery would most recommend?

Seems like after looking on this site that the RNY is by far the most popular. Thanks for all input.    — pennys (posted on April 26, 2009)

Hi Penny, It really depends on what you and your doctor and surgeon think would be best for you. And really the ultimate decision is yours. I can tell you I chose the lap rny because I knew I would not be a good fit with the lap band. I knew I would not be able to keep going back and having them stick a needle in my stomach in order to fill or take out saline in the band. Also with the band you do not lose as much as fast and you don't have the malabsorption with the band. I think for me lap rny was the best decision because I have alot more to lose (roughly 140-150lbs). The lap band may be great for you since you don't have a huge amount to lose. Whatever you choose just remember either one is a tool, it is not a miracle cure. Your whole life needs to change in relation to food and exercise. This is just a step to help you along the way. Best of luck to you.....

hi penny, i too am about 100 lbs overweight, after talking to my surgeon i chose the lap rny because of my addition to sugar(cake ,pies, cookies etc) this is how i will hold myself accountable for what i eat because i do not want to get sick. i had my sugery on 4/2/09 and at my 2 week post op i had lost 20 lbs. good luck on your decision.

Patty I'm having RNY this Friday. I chose it because i also need to loose around 100#. I have arthritis, especially in my knees which have had 2 surgeries each, and in my back where I also have 2 disks with degenerative disk disease. With the RNY I was advised I would loose the weight much faster, which in my case was a good thing. Take your time making your decision. Talk with your Dr, dietician, and people on here. Look closely at what you want and your habits. Good Luck on your decison on journey if you decide to go ahead with any WLS surgery. Donna C.

Talk with your surgeon about which procedure is best for you. My initial choice was to go with the lap band but after attending support group meetings where I learned more about each procedure, I decided to go with lap rny (one of the best decisions I have ever made). I chose this procedure because I wanted to lose my weight fast and not to mention if I try to cheat it will come back to bite me ( in my opinion, worse than the other procedures). I'm sure your surgeon will be more than happy to help you decide which is best for you.

Hi, Try this website, it is great. This is where I had my surgery done RNY 3 years ago with no problems. Be sure to click on all the links and read everthing. Go to www.lapsf.com and this should help you decide. It goes over everything. Please email me if you need assistance. Best Wishes.

Hi Penny,If I was 100lb overweight I would have a gastric bypass or a vertial gastrectomy. I had 70lbs to lose and I choose the VG.I'm happy with it. Your stomach and intestines stay connected but you end up with a smaller stomach. If your a big sweet eater I would have the gastric bypass. You get very ill if you try to eat sweets.Hope this is helpful to you.
