I have BCBS of NC (state employees plan) and they covered my surgery. I had a $2300 out of pocket deductible for a hospital stay, but that was it.

I have Aetna and it was specifically excluded. It is not the insurance company, it is usually the employer who excludes certain procedures. Depending on how big the company is you can attempt to speak to your Human Resources Manager. I was able to get mine covered this way. I am assuming that you have coverage through you or your spouses employer. As far as buying an individual plan, I do not think any of these cover the surgery. Lots of doctors give big discounts to cash patients, and if for some reason you have any complications, your insurance has to pay that part. I wish you the best of luck.

Coverage for bariatric surgery is a separate policy that has to be added to the basic policy. It is not available to employers with less than 300 employees, even if they want to add it. If your employer is larger than that, you can talk to them about it, but it will raise the premiums for everyone in the company so many will not do it. I had to put my surgery on a credit card - I'm paying 13.9% interest but believe me, it is worth every penny.

I have blue cross, blue shield or now Anthem and they covered mine. I had to pay the doc 700.00 and the hospital just under 3000.00...or 20 percent. I think it is the employer though, at first mine did not cover it but when they compared cost of treating all the problems being over weight causes, they started covering the surgery. They won't do lap band though, just Roux N Y
