Question:
Is it possible to change ins. companies if your insurance co. does not cover WLS?

The insurance that I have through my job has a written exclusion for WLS. Rather than self-pay, could I not pick up another insurance privately? I called BC/BS and they told me that 1). they would probably deny me private coverage as I am MO and 2). even if they did pick me up, they would not cover my WLS because it would be considered a pre-existing condition. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.    — J. J. (posted on August 7, 2003)

Jessica - You can pick up a private policy, however you are going to pay a lot of money. Not because of the weight, but because they are really expensive. And the ones that aren't, ususally don't cover anything. Plus the weight factor will come into play. What you may want to do is talk to your employer. Are the WLS "friendly"? Maybe they may consider changing when their open enrollment is up to a different insurance company that does cover WLS? Good luck!
