Jessica, I had my Lap/RNY a week ago tomorrow & I'm scheduled to see the surgeon this coming Tuesday to have him remove my pouch but I believe that whatever they did on the inside part stays there. My surgeon has not discussed any removal of staples just the removal of the pouch. If you have any more questions, feel free to check out my profile. I described my RNY experiences there. Hope I helped somehow. Be blessed, Ruth

Personally I didn't have a pouch for draining or staples. I didn't have to go back for 2 weeks and all he did was remove my tape that was over my incisions and that was it. I had absolutely no pain at all with surgery and recovery was a breeze. I was back to work in a week but could have gone sooner. You are going to do great!!! I am almost 4 mos post op and I am down 76 lbs. I was a size 26 bottoms and a 3x top, now I am now I am wearing a 16 bottom and L/ XL top. It feels really good!! Best of luck, you are going to do awesome!!! Tiffaney

My RNY surgeon explained to me the following: year ago surgeons used to use only surgical stitches to make the pouch area. They found that in some cases these stitches would come apart when the patient would eat too much, etc. So common practice from my surgeon is to stitch AND put staples to do the segmenting to assure that the pouch does not separate in the future. The staples are internal and will NOT be removed. Only the staples on surface of your abdomen will be removed--the ones that hold the skin together where the LAP instruments were used for surgery. The internal staples stay in and will reinforce the sutures.

I had the same question for my surgeon because I thought the staples may deteriate or erode over time but that is not true nor are they removed. My surgeon stated the staples for gastric bypass surgery are microscopic and known to last over 30 years. Hope that helps you out!
