I was 53 y/o when I had my gastric bypass, and as far as losing weight or healing time, my surgeon seem to thing there is no difference than a younger person. I always questioned him, because a older person does have a slower lifestyle. My surgeon never even treated me any different because of age. I had a high risk surgery because of heart problems, but the weight loss is the same, excercise and the way you eat is the same. I can tell you it is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I may have been 53 y/o but after losing 186 lbs, I feel 20 y/o. Don't let your age be a factor....my grandmother died at age 54 y/o with complications of diabetes and obesity, my mom died at age 55 y/o with complications of diabetes and obesity, I was 53 and was taking 100 units of insulin and 14 medications, and was mobid obese, I truley believe if I would have not had this surgery I would not be here today.

Hi, I am 51 years old, and like you, I am waiting to have surgery. All of my testing is done, just waiting for all of the doctors reports to be faxed to the Cori Center. I have several medical issues, so I am doing this for me. Go for it!

OK so am I the OLD one in the group???? I just had my surgery Dec 12, 2005. I am moving so much better. The first weeks with the fast weight drop I looked old. But as I felt better and my body took a two week stall to catch up I looked my self again except glowing. At least thats what hubby said I was glowing. Er maybe he put the glow there. I will post Wed after I come from the doctor to report the latest weight lost. I know I have lost some more. I can tell by these baggy jeans I keep wearing. I really need to give them up before somebody thinks I am trying to be a hip hop art tease.

I'll be 52 in May and am seven weeks post LapRny.......feeling good and learning day by day what my stomach can handle and what it cannot. I am a slow loser, having lost only 22 pounds so far, but it is going in the right direction. I have a very slow metabolism and am on thyroid meds, but my tests say I am within range, albeit low. It took me all of 6-7 weeks to feel normal and not exhausted. I have noticed that when I am tired, that's it....no second wind to fall back on. Perhaps that will change as I progress. I still drink two protein shakes per day to keep my levels up and I take Optisource Vitamins made just for Bariatric patients. My bloodwork at six weeks looked great. I feel the only difference between me and a twenty year old having the surgery is that they may be more concerned with flab and scars. For myself, just feeling better and being about to LIVE is my goal.....along with riding a bike and a horse in the near future. I started in March at 288 ....surgery day was 267 and am now 245.......wanting it to go faster but knowing I am doing alright and slow and steady wins the race.

I'm 50 years old and 2 years post op. I was a size 22-24 and sometimes up to a 26....I am now a solid size 8 and can wear some size 6. I have lost 135 lbs and more in inches. I should have done this 20 years ago after my last child. I feel 100% better with energy I have not had in years. I can chase those grandkids, I can ride a bike, I can go on hikes, and more. I love to shop now ALOT! I have very few problems just the typical, over eat and vomit...some stricture and that was taken care of. I am extremely please taht I had RNY. Vera from Ohio

I was 57 when I had the surgery done a year ago. Went from 214 to a size 9 at 135. Best thing I ever did for myself...for both health and self esteem!

Martha, the first thing that comes to mind is to not put it off. Even though my family doctor recommended surgery some years ago, I put it off. When I did finally convince myself of the need, I had trouble finding a doctor to accept me because of my age--I am now 66 years old. I am nearly three months post-op, 60+ pounds lighter and no apparent problems. Recent blood work is good. Arthritic knees have caused me to keep canes handy (one in my truck and one next to my home desk). Today I went to a GNC in a local mall, about a two hundred yard round trip on concrete walkways--no cane. JUST DO IT!... Bud

I will turn 53 in 4 days and I am 3 weeks out from an open duodenal switch. This was a revision from a VBG done in '84. I can't believe how great I feel! I have not had pain meds since 3 days out and I feel better every day! My Dr. said the surgery was very hard and took twice as long as usual because of all the scarring and adhesions I had from the VBG. Don't let your age stop you. I'm looking forward to feeling better as time goes by! Ann Clawson

Good luck, Martha! I was 56 when I had the surgery 4 months ago. I'm down 72 pounds, no complications, no sore feet anymore. I feel great. Hope you will too. If this was more difficult because of my age, I was too happy to notice. Kathleen

I had my surgery last April and was 53. Now down 84 pounds, and weight going down slower, but inches are falling off of me cuz my clothes are getting too big. I feel fantastic and as everyone else said, "I wish I did this sooner". Karen

Hi there, I am 53 and I just hit my two month post op date. I have done nothing but felt better with each passing day. I have such a different relationship with food right now. I eat to maintain my health not to hurt it. I have lost more inches than I ever have with any other diet process I went through and I so happy to be where I am right now. I have had no issues at all which me makes me a bit nervous but I thank God each night for bringing me to this place where I am. So far I have lost 48 pounds and was really concerned I was not losing enough in the right amount of time but I have thryroid issues which I am on medication for so I was told up front my loss may be a little slower. You have made the right decision and the most important thing is to go into surgery knowing that you made the right decision and that everything is going to turn out great. Being positive can take you such a long way. Take care and keep smiling! Deb

Hi Martha, I was 52 when I had my WLS last year. I turned 53 2 months later. I had no complications and the healing process was very quick. I had very little pain after surgery, other then my arthritis kicking back in without my anti-inflamatory drugs. I so love being able to do things that I used to do when I was younger. Having WLS was the best thing that I have ever done. Good luck on you quest ~Karyn~

I just had my fiftieth birthday. I had the surgery (RNY) a year ago, and have lost 160 pounds. I have more trougble eathing than my niece, who also had the surgery, and I am not losing weight as fast as she is, but I feel better and I am losing.

Hi I am 51 years old and 2 years and 5 months post op. I have no regrets in having the surgery! I had mine done by Dr. Dirk Rodriquez and I had HALS surgery. Dr. Dirk also teaches the surgery to other doctors. I can say that I feel better now than I have in many, many years. I am healthier than I have every been. I am thankful for the surgery and for Dr. Dirk. He saved my life. And of course my friend Jan that had the surgery before myself. Dont give up. Stay focused on what you need to do to continue to improve your health. Think positive. Wish you all the luck in the world. See you on the losing side. Deborah G.

I was 57 when I had my surgery 6 years ago....yeah...that makes me...ummmmmmm 29 now? Well, that's my math...never been great at it when it comes to adding up my age. I feel that this can work at any age. I'd have loved to have had it earlier in my life rather than suffer all the things I suffered being MO. But, the past 6 years have been the best, and things are humming along. I went from 310 down to 126....and now am up to a more reasonable weight for me. I think I'm probably blessed with somewhat decent genes, since the saggy skin, while there, is not nearly what I expected it to be, so I have never had plastics. If I did have PS, it would be for vanity reasons only. It's not that big a deal with me. Guess we can call it aging "gracefully?" Anyway...best wishes to you...as you can see, many of us are "older." I doubt sincerely I would have gotten to my ripe old age of "plenty nine" had I not had the surgery.
