Question:
Will I have less risk if I get the surgery while I'm 26 with no prior complications

I assume that you mean no conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure or liver problems? The less problems that you have before surgery the better your recovery should be. I think younger people do better physically but I don't know about mentally. That will be determined by how mature you are. Some risks of surgery are the same for everyone.

Of course there will be less risk. In addition, so long as you are mentally ready, the younger the better. Your body will bounce back more quickly, there is better elasticity in your skin so it should shrink nicely. Best yet, you will reduce any future damage done to your body by carrying the weight. So far as I am concerned, as long as you are in the right head space, the younger the better. It has tons of advantages, not least of which is having the rest of your life back! -x- jen (14 mos & +/- 150 lbs)

i was 50 and this was my first surgery ever (10/25/10). had complications, bladder infection, undetected heart vavle leak. the question is: how much do you have to lose? why do you want to lose it? and be aware that there may be complications despite your age and health. it is not an easy decision to make and should be made by only you. it is a major surgery, but for me, even with the complications I would do it again in a heartbeat because it has already improved my overall health- no more diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol meds.

I was 64 years of age when I finally had the surgery. I have suffered no complications or issues connected with the procedure. Of minor interest might be that my surgeon just happened to see a small growth on the outside of my small intestine while he was in the process of revamping my plumbing. He excised it for biopsy, and it was determined to be a stromal tumor. To this day, I would not have had any clue that the cancer was growing in me had it not been for having the surgery. So for a multitude of reasons, I can say that WLS saved my life.

WLS was the best decision I EVER MADE! I am 9 years post op, my only regret was not doing it sooner...

I gave myself WLS for my 54th birthday. I had mild case of sleep apnea and GERD. No regrets!
