Question:
Do you know of any Doctors that will perform lap band surgery on patients with 30 bmi

I live in Indiana (Southern) - if I had to go out of state- what would I do about follow ups?    — pdaigner (posted on February 6, 2008)

Pamela: Although I am by no means an expert, I would not think that there is a surgeon who would perform such a surgery on you unless there were comorbidities of such a nature that would warrant the need forit. Honestly, I just can't imagine it. You're in good company here as far as people who want to lose weight, but there are likely many here who would like to trade places with you and only have 45 lbs. to lose. Because either lapband or gastric bypass surgery is still a major surgery, there are certain "rules" which are necessary (certain BMI, usually >40, or overweight by >100 lbs, comorbidites, etc). I would probably question the ethics of any surgeon who agreed to do weight loss surgery on you. I am sorry that this may not be what you want to hear, but I believe it to be the truth. Perhaps there are other weight loss programs you could try or maybe you could increase your exercise? I really don't mean these to be just platitudes.

To prepare for bariatric surgery, contact the nearest hospital that offers the surgery. A full program with a surgeon, nutritionist, psychologist, cardiologist, gastroenterologist, and others should be on a team that evaluates you. In the program I am on, we are required to lose approximately 10% with the help of the dietician before we will be considered candidates for surgery. You need to find these answers for yourself. Good luck!

I do not know of any. My suggestions is to follow the same diet form. Look at someone's manual of directions and start with that you would be surprised that you could do it.

The actual research on the lap-band says it can be done on people with a 30 BMI or higher. I do not believe insurance will pay, but if you are self pay many Dr. will do it.

My BMI was 49 and had lap band done by Dr. Mark Shina in 2007 at Baptist East in Louisville but my followups were at his office in Charlestown/Jeffersonville, Indiana. Here's a web link www.louisvillebariatric.com
