Question:
Federal Employee Insurance and Plastic Surgery After WLS

Curious if anyone out there has Federal Employee insurance (I have BC/BS Basic Option) and if they have had any luck getting them to pay for the plastic surgery to remove skin after WLS? Thanks!    — dsimcox (posted on November 12, 2011)

I don't know about Federal Employee program, but I'm on Medicare as primary and BC/BS of NJ as secondary. I recently had a pannicelctomy done(pelvic and groin area) and she tried to tighten the abdominal wall. It went through as a medical neccessity.(with documentation). Otherwise, it would be considered cometic and not covered.

I have the same insurance as you. I have often asked the same question and no one has answered. I guess there are not very many of us (Fed Employees) that took the step to get healthy. I am curious to see how many responses you receive. I had my WLS Gastric bypass in 2009. I am now looking for a good plastic surgeon for the tummy tuck area. Have you already had your surgery? If not, when? Good Luck friend. Take care! And if you do find out any answers please post them. Thanks!

One hint I've heard is that they will approve it if it's causing skin rashes. Must be documented by a doctor of course. Good luck.

You can always call the number on the back of your insurance card to see what is covered with your particular plan.
