Question:
Wondering how long it took for insurance approval?

Hi all! My doctor sent in my chart to the insurance company around 2 weeks ago and I have not heard anything back from them. The wait is killing me! Just wondering how long it took you from the time that your paperwork went into the insurance company to the time it was approved? This is the second time I am submitting my paperwork (the first time, I didn't have the 6 mos. of dr. supervised dieting, now I do.) and I am feeling quite impatient! Thanks for any words of wisdom ;o).    — amysocko (posted on May 31, 2006)

Hi Amy, My Doctor sent my paperwork in on the 18th of May, and I have called my insurance like 4 times now, and they said that it is still being reviewed! They told me that they (the insurance) has up to 30 days to respond! Good luck, I know I am getting very anxious also!! Sarah

I have tricare insurance (army) and after my first doctor appointment I was approved 2 weeks later. I think I got lucky though cuz I've heard others that have taken a lot longer. Sarah P

I have United Healthcare, they received the letter from my surgeron on March 27, 06. I called them every week to check on the status of the letter. It was a very long, and frustating process, but I called yesterday, and they said I was approved and they are mailing out the letter to myself and the surgeon that day! So it took 2 months for all of my process. Good luck, make sure you call them to see if they even received the letter, that would be my advice.

Hi Amy, I have Mainecare it only took 5 days from when the doctors office faxed all paper work. It really depends on who you have for insurer, and their requirements for surgery, Good luck on your journey to wls.

Amy I went through the same thing you are going through. Once my insurance (BCBS-TRS) got the information the second time it took them about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks to approve it and another week for the doctor's office to get the offical approval. I also called about every other day to check on the progress. Good luck!

Hi! It actually took my insurance almost 3 to 4 weeks (business days) to approve my surgery. I have the HMO form of Blue Cross. Hang in there, I know the wait seems like forever! Good luck!

Hi Amy, I was denied initially the first time around too. I had to do the 6th month supervised diet program too and then the 2nd time around after doing that they approved me, but it took about 30 days before i had an answer after they submitted it again for me. Be sure you follow the "critiera" sheet for the insurance company perfectly they are very picky. good luck im sure you will know something soon Terry

Amy, I know how you feel. I felt the same way you did. My doctor submitted my paperwork to my insurance company back on January 30th and I didnt get an approval until February 21st. Not untill three weeks later did I receive a approval. I called the insurance company almost everyday to check on the status of my claim and everytime I called I was told the same thing..... it can take up to 30 days for a approval. I had my surgery on Wednesday March 1st. I know its easier said then done but try to be patient. Trust me I know how you feel. You will hear from them before you know it. The only advise I can offer is to keep calling your insurance company to check on the status of your claim. Even if you feel like your being a nag! Call them anyway. Good luck!
