Question:
My insurence will pay 80% of my surgery. Any suggestions for my part?

Should I take out a loan? Any helpful hints?    — sweetcheeks194 (posted on February 4, 2008)

My surgeon billed in at over 41K for everything and insurance paid 22K plus, I'm left with just under 2K for my part. I'm pleased as I can be with this.. I know some who only had to pay a co-pay plus a little but I had considered self-pay if insurance didn't come through, so glad that did. Good Luck

Hey there, My insurance paid 80% My out of pocket was about 4,500 give or take. Well worth every penny spent. We are coverd by BCBS of North Carolina. Between your Dr and your insurance Co, they should be able to give you some kind of a estimate on what you will have to pay. With My Dr. & The hospital I had to pay them both in full before my surgery. Best of luck to you. Donna

Did you check with your insurance to see if there is a max out of pocket? I guess this is for the surgeon and he is out of network? If so ask the dr if he will accept that payment in full....No harm in asking, lots of them do. If not agree to pay a certain amount monthly and stick to it so it won't strap you all at once. Good luck, it is surely worth it.

Pay for it any way you can, but I would strongly suggest saving and paying as much right away as possible. It will lower your stress and if you have a complication you don't have the added stress of financial woes. Up front is always better. Keep in mind that it is 20% of "allowable" or "agreed" on charges. For example, they bill $40,000 for your surgery, but your insurance company has a contract with your hospital, and only pays $20,000. You owe 20% of $20,000 not the $40,000. Also keep in mind that your doctors, anesthesia and xray bills may be billed separately. This can add up, but you should only have to pay 20% of allowable charges, not the billed amount. Wait for the dust to settle and get a bill, but have plenty in savings to pull from to pay it when it comes. Less stress, and enjoy your new body debt free! That is my suggestion. Take care. Ask the Doctor and the hospital if you can make payments over the next year in 12 equal payment or contact capital one. They financed my entire surger over 18 month for 1.99%. It ran me $25,000.00 and the monthly payments are 1330.00. so 20% would be 266.00 per month. I save that in food alown and I never felt better. Regardless of what you do, move forward, as family for their help as it is your live you are talking about. You be healthier and happier for having had the wls.

I wouldn't take out a loan. You should just be able to set up a payment plan once you receive the bill after your surgery. You should do this because more often than not the hospital/surgeon/anesthesiologist will not charge you interest. Also, I also thought I had to pay 20% and when I ended up getting the bill, I only had to pay $400! So you wouldn't want to take out a loan in case you have to pay way less than expected. Just wait and see what happens.

In my case, my insurance paid 70% and I had to pay about $5500. I applied for a charity program that the hospital had. I qualified and I end paying $0.

I set up a Federal Spending account when i re enrolled for my insurance to help defray the cost of my portion when I have my surgery. I did this so that I was using my own money interest free and so that I didnt have to worry about paying it all at once when the time came for the surgery.

I just had my surgery Dec26,207. My insurance paid 90%. 3 days before me surgery the hospital called and asked me was I able to pay a deposit of 500 dollars and they would bill me for the rest. I havent received any bill as of yet but, I 'm sure they are coming. Good luck any amount of money is worth it
