Question:
I'm considering going to Brazil to have the DS with Dr. Marchesini

has anyone had this done or know anyone that has gone to Brazil with Dr. Marchesini? Also has anyone had problems after surgery with Doctors here in the states seeing them for any complications?    — LarryO1949 (posted on January 5, 2008)

I would not go out of the country to have surgery because most US surgeons will not follow up on someone elses surgery especially if you have problems. I have worked for a surgeon before and he always had a policy of never seeing another surgeons patients. It they didn't want him to do the surgery why should he agree to see another surgeons patient who is having problems. Most look at it that way from the ones I know.

I've known of several people on this site who have gone to Mexico for their surgery, had problems, and the U.S. surgeons had an awful time fixing them up.

I went to Mexico (alone) I had to no choice if I wanted to get my health back and a life.I was treated great and can not complain with my care, as for the states, could I do the same (no) I had total knee replacement, a few months after the bypass, the nurses couldn't even get to me to help me get up to go to the bathroom, what does that tell ya ... Yes they are busy, but that just isn't an excuse when you have to pee for 30 minutes . Just do research before you go out of the states. http://www.drjoya.com/ This is where I went, would go back in a minute.

I would suggest you come to the DS board here and ask this question. There are many of Dr. M's happy patients there. Also, don't know where you live, but my US surgeon does offer a very competitive self pay price for DS - under $20k. His website is www.cutweight.org. Good luck!

I went to Ensenada, Mexico with Dr. Aguirre. I have done fabulous. No complications whatsoever. I am 6 months post op and down 85 lbs. I have a friend who had the same surgery (RNY) done here in the states and has had to go back for 3 more surgeries due to complications. You can have complications no matter where you go. Each body responds differently and sometimes it is of no fault of the surgeon. My care in Mexico was excellent.
