Question:
DS approved in 2001?

Is there anyone with Pacificare HMO, BS Access+ HMO, PERScare or PERSchoice through CalPERS (public employees in CA) who has had DS approved in 2001? They are saying RNY or VBG only but I feel very strongly that DS is right for me. I am appealing first denial and need ideas!    — Chris T. (posted on October 11, 2001)

Go to the www.duodenalswitch website and look up the research papers. I would point to the fact that the DS leaves you with a fully functioning stomach, which reduces the need for post surgical procedures such as stoma dilation, staple disruption, etc. Go to the library on this website and look at post op complications for a complete listing of the RNY problems that can occur. Get your DS surgeon to write a letter of support and cite all medical research available that supports your choice. Point to the fact that the cost for the actual surgery and post op hospital care is identical tot he RNY distal procedure. Good Luck!
