Question:
Has anyone changed dr and surgery type after ins approval?

I'm rethinking my dr, hospital (because of distance to home)and surgery type (open to lap) decision. If I get an approval for the first dr and then change everything, is the ins likely to approve the second request?    — jocelyn (posted on August 16, 2002)

I also considered changing surgeons and hospitals but not surgery type. I called my insurance, Anthem BC/BS, and asked them if it would mess things up and they said it would not. If I qualified for surgery I could use any approved surgeon and hospital. I did not end up changing though.

My insurance company told me that they approve the surgical procedure, not the surgeon. I changed surgeons with no problem. If I had changed type of surgery, I would have had to go through the approval process again. Best of Luck.
