Question:
I had my husbands insurance in 2001 and they did not approve the surgery till Jan 21

2002. I in the mean time I thought they were going to deny me the surgery so I took out my insurance when we enrolled in December because they do cover the surgery. Now I was told I will have to wait for my insurance to approve before they will schedule my surgery. I was wondering why when this really falls back from last year and you would think that I wouldn't have to. Has anyone had this happen to them? I am scared even though I know they do cover this surgery that they will deny me. Redonda Mcdaniels    — Redonda M. (posted on January 28, 2002)

Unfortunately, as soon as your insurance became effective, it also became your primary insurance, with your husband's being secondary. The secondary won't pay until the primary has done its part. Of course, your husband's insurance doesn't want to pay at all, if your insurance will do it. Your husband's insurance may still pay co-pays, because it can pick up what your insurance doesn't, but that's probably about all it will do.

I used to do billing for a group of doctors. If I remember correctly (and I could have a brain lapse here)... if your insurance denies you, then your husband's insurance (since it's your second insurance now) will pay what they were originally going to pay. So either way you win.
