Question:
I NEED TO KNOW IF ANYONE SENT PICTURES TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY?

FOR APPEAL LETTER DID ANYONE SEND PICTURES OF THEMSELF TO SHOW PROOF HOW BIG THEY WERE? FROM THE TIME THEY STARTED TO GAIN UNTIL RECENTLY? I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS JUST TO SEE IF IT WOULD HELP GET AN IDEA OF HOW BIG I AM.    — Nicole H. (posted on June 21, 2002)

I sent front, both sides and back pictures when I submitted all my info for the first time. I put on a shirt I wouldn't be caught dead wearing in public and hopefully it worked. I just submitted on Monday. The front pic I used is on my profile. Maria

Hi, my doctors office took pictures to send in to my insurance company. I had my surgery at BTC in Ohio. I had approval within 48 hrs after they received my paperwork. I think that it is a good idea to take a picture.

I put on clothes that made me look fat, I wore shorts and a tank top. I had my husband take 4 photos of me side view and 4 front view, I then took them to a 1 hr place and I picked the photos that I thought were best, and scanned them and printed them on card stock. and took them in to surgeon, and before I printed my photos I went into adobe photo on my pc and added text. I wanted ins to see I was a real person not a number or stastic, even though the paper work is very important, a photo speak volumes. I have not heard as my appt. was yesterday but In my opinion It can hurt and will certainly help.

I scanned pics from when I was age 10, until present, showing my "ups and downs". I was a size 6 twice, a size 14, 4 itmes, a size 26, 3 times. Whoa what a story those pics told. I added captions next to each one, year, date, weight loss, or gain, since the previous pic. It showed I had lost 497 lbs, and gained 590 since I was 10. So yes, I did send pictures.

I actually sent two pictures of me into the insurance company to show them what I looked like. I wanted them to see me as a person not just as a decision. I am still waiting for approval.

I can't imagine any insurance co would need photo's to make a decision. Usually their criteria needs to fit the written policy protocols using BMI figures, weight, type of comorbities, etc. But to be fair to all, using pictures and basing of looks to decide if someone qualifies for surgery just sounds very unprofessional and even discriminative to me.

I am pre-op and I certainly plan on sending in some pictures. I met a woman about a yr. ago and she sent in pictures of herslef in the doorway, to show how much room she took up, herself behind the wheel of a car, and in a "regular" size chair with arms. She said she actually got comments from the insurance company that without them, she might not have been approved so quickly. I've even heard a couple people say they sent in video to the insurance company of what their life is like because of being MO. The old saying applies here, a picture can speak a thousand words. Good luck to you!
