Question:
Anyone from Idaho suggest an insurance company covering WLS?

Although I'm only 29, I have a lot of health issues. The major one being an insulin dependent type 2 diabetic with uncontrolled blood sugars, plus I'm very insulin resistant. I work in home health and so my employer will not offer insurance (or any other benefits). I've been looking for an insurance policy on my own as I'm having trouble trying to find a way to self pay my way through surgery. I've used a couple of those internet search programs that put you in contact with multiple carriers but that is pretty much fizzling out. I've gotten a whole 2 contacts out of this and they both think I MIGHT be able to get on blue cross (Blue Cross of Idaho or Regency) but the paper work shows an exclusion for weight loss surgery on both insurers. If anyone can suggest an Insurance Company in Idaho who will cover this surgery, please let me know.    — Shelly S. (posted on February 16, 2002)

Shelly, Why do you have to insure with a company in Idaho--why not get insurance through a nationwide company like my insurer, United Health Care. United Health Care covered my surgery without any appeal whatsoever.

I think I asked this wrong. The insurance company mentioned doesn't offer insurance in my area without being through an employer. Does anyone have an answer about ANY insurance company who will offer INDIVIDUAL coverage in IDAHO ??

Shelley.....I too have been doing a lot of research regarding individual policies with little luck. The ONLY ones I have found for ID is Regence Blue Shield which has a specific exclusion, and Blue Cross who has a very vague exclusion with an exception for medical necessity. HOWEVER, I was just denied and individual policy with them. Seems an individual policy is very difficult to get if you have ANY health issues, including weight. Sorry this wasn't more helpful, but if you do learn of any others please let me know as well.

Shelley, I have an idea. I'm in Idaho, but my insurance co is Mailhandlers--thru the US Postal Service...probably not what you're looking for. BUT, why don't you come to a meeting of the support group & ask some of the people there? Sorry, I didn't see your question earlier as the group meeting was tonight. But, if you are close to the Boise area, just call Dr Ediger's office & they would tell you when & where the next group meeting will be. However, the next group meeting should be Feb 19th at St Alphonsus Medical Center. The room does vary sometimes, tho, so it might be a good idea to check with the doctor's office. Lots of people come to the meetings, you'd have many people to ask & lots of people come who are just asking questions or finding out about the surgery. Dr Ediger usually comes. You would be welcome. Feel free to e-amil me at [email protected] if you want to. Kathy
