Question:
Is my insurance crazy?

My insurance has alredy approved my sugery. They done this last month. My sugery in June 28. My question is i just got the statement from them where i went to the Doctor for the first visit and they will not pay. The form said the reason is because they will not pay for weight reduction doctors. I am so comfused what does this mean? How could they approve the operation and not the Doctor visit?    — Michelle R. (posted on June 4, 2000)

Your Doctor could also resubmit for payment using a different code for the reason he saw you, instead of weight loss consultation, he/she could put hypertension or any other of your comorbidities, in order to get it processed. Your Dr. is usually easier to deal with than the insurance co.- and more than likely the insurance company will require them to resubmit anyhow for them to process it.

I have Blue Cross insurance and they approved my surgery and then denied the preop testing. They did not like the diagnosis used for the lab work. The diagnosis code used was for morbid obesity and that was fine for the surgery just not the preop tests. They wanted a specific preop code (this took several phone calls to BC to straighten out since they wouldn't tell me what code they wanted - I finally found a rep that was helpful). So it might be just a coding problem.
