Question:
If you have had an AGB or Lap band in Mexico, can you please share your experience?

I'm a self-pay and I have heard some very good things about the doctors in Mexico (I'm in Southeast Texas) doing the adjustable band laproscopically. The price is about half that of doing the surgery locally. So that is a factor in my decision but I want to make sure these are good doctors and facilities. Please let me know how your experience was.    — M. B. (posted on June 17, 2002)

I didnt have an AGB but I have one friend and several (3)acquaintances that did and the outcome wasn't good. They all gained their weight back. I think this occured because my friend was sugar addicted and much like the VBG you can eat around this procedure. Her son was the opposite. He went down to 145 and had to have it reversed because he was getting so weak from not being able to eat. The three acquaintances I know that had this procedure all gained back their pre surgery weight. I am sure there are success stories but since you asked, I felt obligated to tell you what I know about the procedure. This was several years ago (maybe 10) and the procedure may have changed. The physician was Dr. Molina

Check out the Bandsters website. There are a few people who have had this done in Mexico and around the world. I have checked on some clinical trials, and the stats are similar to having RNY. Medical Journal called OBESITY can be found online.

I don't know how much you have to pay for AGB in Mexico, but I am also self pay and will be having my AGB surgery in middle July. Dr. Spivak in Baytown will be doing it. The cost is somewhere around $13,500. I am getting a loan to pay for it, that may also be an option for you. Good Luck. Feel free to contact me.

I was checking around, and Dr. Kuri in Tiajuana, MX. charges $8500 for the band. He also does Lap-RNY, but I dont know what the cost of that is. Go to yahoo.com and look up weight loss sergury and you will find lots of info. Good luck to you!

Dr. Molina does the NON Adjustable Gastric Band surgery, not the Adjustable Gastric Band surgery. The surgery he does is really not much different than the VBG, which is a lousy surgery IMO. The AGB surgery is adjustable, and I have never heard of anyone being so weak from not eating that they had to have it reversed - the adjustability means that they can control your restriction easily. This also means that regain is less likely - you can always get an adjustment, even several years out, if you find yourself creeping up in weight. Some RNY patients need revisions to continue losing or prevent regain, and I'd much rather have an out-patient shot in my side than go through extra surgery.

I'm 1 week post op from having a major abdominoplasty done in Mexico. I know my doc also does the lap band. I believe it runs about $7000. I found the facility top notch, super clean. Although some of the girls who take care of you speak little to no english, they were the most caring people and took excellent care of me. Although I work in healthcare in the US, I have to admit that the care I received there was far superior to any I could have received in the US. It was great. If you want more info on my doc just let me know. Shelly

DOCTOR MOLINA DOESNT DO THE ADJUSTABLE BAND!!! He does the nonadjustable. I wouldnt recomend his procedure to anyone!!! I am seriously looking into the ABG because of the problems I had with Dr Molina and his non ajustable band. He has alot more falures that he will let anyone know. If I would have been able to adjust the band then I would still have mine today!!! I think Mexico is the right choice!! No one near me will do the AGB on someone so over weight as I am!!!
