Question:
Will insurance pay a portion if the gallbladder is removed during bariatric surgery?

I have Medicare and Mutual of Omaha Ins. Mutual of Omaha has a very specific exclusion clause about sugery for to treat MO, so Medicare will be my primary for bariatric surgery. However, if my doctor decides my gallbladder needs to be removed should Mutual of Omaha be billed for that portion of the surgery?    — Linda M. (posted on April 10, 2002)

I have Aetna Health and they cover the removal of the gallbladder. In fact it is required according to my ins that the galbladder is removed and a covered expense. You can check your policy by going on line. Hope this helps. sandy

My insurance would not pay if the Gall Bladder was not diseased. My pre-op tests showed a healthy organ. I told my surgeon to go ahead and remove it and I would pay his $900 fee. After the Gall Bladder was removed, they do an examination of it and low and behold it had many stones! So the insurance did end up paying for it in my case!
