Question:
Has Anyone Ever been Approved without even knowing it at first?

I was approved to have a Gastric Bypass on June 10th 2002 and the Surgeon had not even sent in the request letter yet. I believe what happened was that my pcp submitted all of my test results along with her request and they approved it that way. The Surgeons office is still trying to figure out how I got approved on the first try so quickly and without the Surgeons letter. Has this happened to anyone else? — Hotdiva (posted on June 20, 2002)

If you got approved that quickly, I wouldn't complain about it. You are probably one of the very lucky few to have that happen that way. Good Luck and best wishes.

Isabella, first off, CONGRATULATIONS! I wish you the best of luck! Secondly, I had something similiar happen to me. I was told by my ins. company (Cigna HMO) that I had been authorized for a certain date---but my surgeon's office had not heard this--and refused to believe it until they had the actual approval on their desk! What actually happened to me was that it passed the medical review and I was given a tentative date in Cigna's computer. Then, when the BIG guy got my info and approved it...that's when my surgeon's office got the approval notice and scheduled me. My suggestion to you would be to wait it out a day or two, then contact your ins. company and see if any info has been sent to your surgeons office. If they say yes, call them and ask if they've recieved it. If they have...try to schedule. If not, give them a couple days to weed through the paperwork and see what happens then. Good Luck! You've made it through the hardest part! Keep us updated!~

Isabella: Congratulations on your approval. I had a similar incident happen with my surgeon's office. When I sent all the required information to the surgeon, his office staff called and said it wasn't enough. I was slow in gathering the rest of the information requested, and low and behold the surgeon's office called and said I was approved. I guess they submitted it to Cigna HMO while I was gathering other things. Congratulations again!!!

YES! I had already gone to my PCP, had him sign a letter of medical necessity that I wrote for the insurance company, Scheduled and went to my physh evaluation with an outline of questions and tests that would satisfy both my insurance company and surgeon about having the procedure done and had my pulmonary doctor schedule for the same day as I scheduled to see my surgeon (one on one). I submitted all my information (letter of medical necessity, psych evaluation report, a medical release from my Rhemutologist, first and most resent blood work for my lupus, ultrasound report stating that I had gallstones and all my referals to BCBS and was approved (2 days later) the day before my schedule date to see my surgeon. My surgeon's office was also VERY surprised and that I was approved without them submitting one single paper :-) It is called determination! Getting the job done instead of waiting for someone to do it for you. Muwahhh good luck with your surgery! ~Diane~
